A bridge, a band and now a brewery, the Narrows is an iconic name in the South Sound. Narrows Brewing Company in Tacoma is on the cusp of its opening day, and a talk with head brewer Joe Walts offers insight on what to expect.

"The main thing people are going to notice is it's right on the waterfront," he said. "You can see the Narrows Bridge right there."

With a second story view, the taproom is divided into two separate rooms connected at the same bar, lending itself to an L-shaped arrangement. Reclaimed wood from the marina is used in the structure and décor, and while there is wine, beer and food from Boathouse 19, there is no liquor.

"It's more of a hangout, have-a-couple-beers kind of place," Walts said.

Grand opening weekend is July 12 to 14, with live music by the Lucy Horton Band and the introduction of three beers on tap: a pale ale, an IPA and a golden ale. The golden will be more of a pilsner rather than a typical craft golden, Walts noted.

"It's going to have more flavor," he said.

Co-owner Scott Wagner had a hard time deciding which of Narrows' brews is his favorite, but admitted he leans toward the IPA and golden, noting that he's anxious to taste the other beers Walts is working on. To start, the brewery plans to have six rotating taps.

Like many small businesses, Narrows Brewing is a work in progress, and both Walts and Wagner acknowledge the process, saying they will adapt and assess as they go.

"It will evolve," Walts said.  "I think our hope is that people that come here and hang out will help us figure out our brand."

The best thing about opening Narrows Brewing? "Being involved in the creation of something unique that provides jobs and allows people to enjoy the waterfront and cold beer at the same time," Wagner said.
