Chatting with Roni Stenehjem at Steven Christian salon

Located in an alley between downtown Tacoma and the Dome District is a quiet little salon hideaway, Steven Christian. Once a coffee warehouse, the building’s ultra tall walls, ceiling-to-floor windows and airy floor plan are inviting. Almost everywhere you look, potted plants grow; the greenery softening what might otherwise be an austere space. After being sick for a month, the taming of my over-grown eyebrows afforded me the opportunity to chat with salon manager and hair artist Roni Stenehjem.

Prior to settling at Steven Christian, Stenehjem tried out several salons. While working at a beauty supply store, her then manager referred her to Steven Christian. Upon first meeting owner Christian himself, she knew she’d found her spot — their vibes meshed brilliantly. Stenehjem cuts, waxes, curls, flatirons, and styles some of the hottest heads in the area including the models from many a fashion event in 2008 and a lingerie show this January.

“I’m like an addict. If I don’t have someone’s hair to do, I’ll just pull somebody off the street,” Stenehjem jokes and shares her personal motto, “I keep my prices fair because everyone deserves great hair.”

Back to my brows — Stenehjem combed, clipped and reshaped them before ever applying wax.

“The end result looks smoother,” she says.

I was pleased that she helped diminish my pain, using less wax than anyone prior.  That attention to detail and concern for customer comfort radiates through the entire laid back salon.

Stenehjem was right. I left with well-groomed perfectly arched brows.
