BITE US: Zocalo coming soon

A Mexican restaurant and bakery coming to 38th Street

The corner of South 38th and South G streets has been home to many businesses over the years; the most recent past saw a Philly sandwich shop. Signs on the windows now promise Zocalo Mexican Restaurant and Bakery will be the next inhabitant.

Yes, a Mexican bakery. Will that mean pan de huevo? Made from dense, yeasty egg bread dough, it's similar to a cinnamon roll; chocolate, vanilla, or sugar cream frosting is common.

No menu is available yet, but one can hope for other traditional favorites: sweet empanadas - traditional turnovers filled with spiced sweet potato, apple and other fruit or sweet pumpkin, piedra - pecan raisin cookie, and reposteria de polvo - buttery powdered sugar dusted shortbread.

A man unloading baking racks stopped just long enough to share that those with a south-of-the-border sweet tooth may find themselves rejoicing at the new reason to visit Lincoln's International District within a month.
