Social Security Web site helps wounded warriors

Processing of disability claims can be expedited

The Social Security Administration has set up a Web site that helps military service members receive expedited processing of disability claims from Social Security.

At http://www.ssa.gov/woundedwarriors/, answers to several questions about applying for disability benefits can be found.

Benefits available through Social Security are different than those from the Department of Veterans Affairs and require a separate application.

The expedited process is used for military service members who become disabled while on active military service on or after Oct. 1, 2001, regardless of where the disability occurs.

The Web site can help answer questions about what types of benefits wounded warriors can receive, what Social Security's definition of a disability is, how military pay affects eligibility for disability benefits, how to and what is needed to apply for benefits, the decision making process for disability claims, and things people can do to expedite the process.

The Web site also connects users with links to useful information about Social Security and Supplemental Security Income disability benefits.

It also has links to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs Web pages.
