As Pacific Lutheran University prepares for a commencement that marks their 125th anniversary; they choose to celebrate the graduating class with the acknowledgement of the university's rich Norwegian Heritage. PLU has a long history of seeking out Norwegian exchange students to bring to the United States, as well as sending American students to Norway in an attempt to ensure both nations' students receive the highest academic and cultural education. This year's commencement ceremony has caught the attention of His Majesty, King Harald V of Norway.

This marks King Harald's first visit to Washington state in 20 years. Though His Majesty will also meet with Governor Inslee and both Norwegian and American companies based in Seattle, his visit to PLU will be the only public appearance in the state. Unlike his last visit in October of 1995, His Majesty will not be accompanied by the Queen or Crowned Prince. There is much building anticipation among both students and faculty at PLU as preparations for His Majesty's arrival are nearing their end.

All of Pacific Lutheran University's commencement day festivities will be open to the public to ensure that all have the opportunity to greet King Harald V. Beginning at 10:20 a.m., Norwegian music and dance will prelude the King's arrival by 20 minutes. During this time both Norwegian and American flags will be handed out to spectators; a short parade is then scheduled as King Harald V tours the Pacific Lutheran University campus with the PLU President, Mr. Thomas W. Krise making their way to "Red Square". The parade will end with a short ceremony dedicating another "rune" in honor of his royal visit. The runes are artistic structures that commemorate the Norwegian heritage that binds PLU to Norway. Upon these runes are inscribed the names of all royal visitors to the campus.  It is recommended that all spectators arrive at 12180 Park Avenue South in Tacoma prior to the King's arrival at 10:40 a.m.

Pacific Lutheran University's commencement ceremony, which will take place at the Tacoma Dome, Saturday, May 23, begins at 2 p.m. The King of Norway will receive an honorary doctorate of law from Pacific Lutheran University as well as deliver the commencement address. This event is also open to the public.
