South Sound a "Great" defense community

(Official release)

It’s official: The South Sound is one of the best regions in the country when it comes to supporting its military.

On Monday, the Association of Defense Communities (ADC) and the Defense Communities Caucus designated 10 communities across the nation as “Great American Defense Communities” for providing unwavering support to service members and military families.

Thanks to the collaborative leadership from the South Sound Military & Communities Partnership, ADC recognized the South Puget Sound region - the only winner that represented a region rather than a single city.

This is the first year of the Great American Defense Communities program, which acknowledges the unique contributions that cities, counties and regions that host installations make to improve quality of life for service members, veterans and their families. This inaugural class of communities was selected by a panel of defense community advocates and experts from dozens of nominees based on the broad range of efforts they carry out on behalf of military personnel and their families, covering areas such as education, job opportunities, housing, family support during deployments and community appreciation.

“All 10 of our inaugural class of honorees truly embodied the ideals this initiative was designed to celebrate — making host communities for our nation’s military installations ‘Great Places to Call Home,’” said ADC CEO Tim Ford.

“The Great American Defense Communities program will help ADC and the Defense Communities Caucus share positive stories about the exemplary efforts being made in communities to support defense installations and their personnel,” Ford said.

The inaugural class of honorees:

  • South Puget Sound, Wash.
  • Colorado Springs, Colo.
  • Dayton, Ohio
  • Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.
  • Goldsboro, N.C.
  • Grand Forks, N.D.
  • Lawton, Okla.
  • Manhattan, Kan.
  • Monterey, Calif.
  • Okaloosa County, Fla.

In the South Sound, local leaders praised their community’s support for Joint Base Lewis-McChord and other instillations. ?In the nomination submitted by SSMCP, the South Puget ?Sound received letters of support from:

  • Nisqually Chairman Farron McCloud
  • Nisqually CEO, John Simmons
  • U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell
  • U.S. Reps. Denny Heck, Derek Kilmer and Adam Smith
  • State Reps Christine Kilduff and Dick Muri
  • State Sen. Steve O’Ban
  • Thurston County Commissioners Sandra Romero, Bud Blake, Cathy Wolfe
  • Retired U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks
  • I Corps Commander LTG Stephen Lanza
  • JBLM Commander COL Dan Morgan
  • Lakewood Mayor Don Anderson
  • Lacey Mayor Andy Ryder

Lakewood's Mayor highlighted how SSMCP provides a regional forum to address military civilian land-use compatibility issues that may negatively affect JBLM’s mission.

”SSMCP has partnered with JBLM to conduct several needs surveys to ensure local communities and businesses understand service members concerns,” Anderson added

??Some excerpts:

  • Lacey Mayor Ryder: “JBLM and the South Sound are a sterling example of a community committed to providing educational and employment opportunities to active, transitioning, and veteran service members and their families.”
  • Heck, Kilmer and Smith: “With all the South Puget Sound offers our active duty service members ad their families, it is easy to see why JBLM is the Army’s No. 1 requested duty station and is home for thousands of military retirees. The community based support and collaboration from local organizations and municipalities with JBLM is simply outstanding.”
  • LTG Lanza: “I highlight the South Sound Military & communities Partnership because it serves as one example where local governments and military community support organizations have banded together in a regional partnership to collaborate with JBLM on a myriad of issues.”

This year’s class will be recognized throughout 2016 at a variety of events in Washington, D.C., including an exhibit and reception on Capitol Hill.

The broadcast journalist with 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, earned second place in the FORSCOM Kieth L. Ware Award for the category of Deployed TV News Report, July 18. According to Spc. Glen Shackley, a journalist with the 7th Infantry Division, Burns plans to use the award as a teaching tool, to encourage his soldiers to strive for perfection.
