Furniture is essential in transforming a house into a home, and finding ideal pieces suited to individual tastes requires a balance of both aesthetic appeal and functionality. Fortunately, The Old Cannery Furniture and Mattress Warehouse in Sumner offers a vast selection of furniture options with something for everyone.

Established in 1984, The Old Cannery is a family-owned business located at 13608 Valley Ave. East. What began as a small upholstery business owned by Tony and Marbeth Grant in 1953, has become a thriving and well-known store that appeals to a wide variety of preferences while catering to customers in a lively and dynamic environment.

"It's a very comfortable atmosphere. If a family were to come in here, it's not like you're shopping in a place where you can't touch or sit on anything. Everything in our store is -oriented; that's how it's supposed to be," said Jackie Walls, events and promotions coordinator for The Old Cannery, who has been working for the company for more than 17 years.

The company certainly lives up to its slogan, "Most people consider us quite a find," by offering shoppers unique services and embellishments that make The Old Cannery a fun place to shop. In addition to the quality, above-standard furniture, the store also makes and sells its own fudge, has animatronics placed around the store, and even has an indoor suspended train system.

The Old Cannery Railroad (OCRR) boasts the largest suspended multi-train arrangement on the west coast and totals 1,400 feet of tracking that circles around two showrooms and the warehouse. The establishment offers a viewing platform so patrons can get a closer look at the impressive seven-scale-mile structure.

Another huge appeal for the revered furniture store is its rotating assortment of hand-crafted fudge.

"We've got fudge made daily. It depends on the supply and the demand what flavors are really hot at the moment. As soon as you walk into the store, you can smell the fudge being made," said Walls. "We keep about twenty-eight flavors on-hand daily and offer seasonal specialty flavors as well."

The Old Cannery also carries furniture crafted by local and Pacific Northwest-oriented businesses. Grand Wood, based in Lakewood, and Stanton Furniture, Inc., founded in Oregon, make the list, and the company hires local businesses to build custom pieces for special orders.

The Old Cannery places an emphasis on giving back to the community - and to the military. It has sponsored Welcome Home parties in showrooms, has put on Salute to the Troops events in the parking lot, and donates 100 turkeys for the annual Turkey Drop during Thanksgiving. Additionally, the business regularly makes contributions to food banks and other various charities year-round.

Whether looking for modern, contemporary, or eclectic pieces for any room in the home, The Old Cannery is a great place to shop and a great family experience.
