Grape juice's older, more mature cousin, wine has established itself as more than a delicious beverage; it has become a culture. And it is the near-cinematic way in which it's often enjoyed. No doubt the world of wine can be a little intimidating - why are there so many different types of glasses? Why do people smell the wine? Thankfully, there are many welcoming local wineries in Pierce and Thurston County where knowledgeable and passionate aficionados answer the inquiries people having been dying to ask.

If headed down to Olympia, stop by the Medicine Creek Winery. Owners Liz and Jim Meyers have transformed their enormous red barn into an 1800s New Orleans brothel-inspired tasting room, wine processing area and dance floor. Upon entering the beautifully decorated space, customers are greeted by the friendly and energetic Liz and her two friendly and adorable bartending dogs. The vibe is romantic, and the signature award-winning Stage Coach Red Blend and Cabernet Franc does the scene justice with its deep and robust flavors. Medicine Creek Winery is an ideal place to bring a date, or even a group of friends. Be sure to bring military ID, as it graciously offers military discounts on both tastings and bottles.

Also in Olympia is Madsen Family Cellars, which originally opened in 2005 with owner Dana Madsen crafting wines in his garage. In 2007, the business expanded to its new location and  continues to specialize in Berdot red wines such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Although ‘Big Reds' are the focus, it also offers both dry and sweet white wines. Madsen Family Cellars also caters to military and offers a 10-percent discount.

In Tenino, Scatter Creek Winery awaits with a plethora of award-winning white, red and specialty wines such as Peach Breeze Chardonnay and Koko Indulgence Port. Created in 2005 by husband and wife duo Andrea and Terril Keary in their garage, Scatter Creek has flourished into a well-known business that has even catered events on JBLM. Open seven days a week, this winery offers military discounts year round and has a significant active-duty and retired clientele.

Tacoma is home to Ginko Forest Winery, an estate winery established in 2007. As an estate winery, Ginkgo's grows, harvests, crushes, ferments and bottles its own grapes and wines. Boasting 37 acres of land, 16 varieties of grapes and a gift shop that carries local artisan work, this winery is a treat for those who would like to learn about the entire winemaking process. The winery's bestselling wine is its Ginko Red - a blend of Cabernet, Syrah, and Merlot - though it also offers a selection of blended whites that are popular.

Located in Eatonville, Stringtown Cellars and Lavender Farm offers all of the makings for a quaint wine tasting experience. In addition to uniquely crafted wines like its popular Farmhouse Rose red and Honey Lavender white, Stringtown also offers an array of take-home goodies such as fudge, locally smoked cheeses, candles, and lavender-infused soaps and essential oils. When the time is right, owner and winemaker John Adams encourages patrons to stop by for a tasting and to take advantage of his lovely and fragrant you-pick lavender farm.

When searching for the perfect bottle of wine, one does not need travel to the nearest chain grocery store. Instead, consider stopping by one of these local wineries, where you will not only find a uniquely crafted wine, but you will also create a memorable experience.
