January is over. New Year's Resolutions have been made weeks ago. It is no secret that gym memberships rise in January; with more and more individuals vowing to get their weight and food regimen in check. Then, life starts to creep in around these goals - work runs late and kids get sick. We find ourselves slacking off, then maybe giving up completely, saying that you will start fresh in the spring.

Are you in this boat? Do you find yourself tempted to push the workout to ‘tomorrow'? Well, I am happy to announce that there is extra help for you out there. Look no further than your computer, or even your smart phone. The following websites and free apps are designed for numerous things - to help keep your diet in check, calorie counting, tips for additional workouts, and even mileage counters for your run or bike around town.

MapMyFitness - This extensive network of sites include options to map your run, walk, hike, triathlon, or mountain biking for accurate mileage. This site also offers a food log, calculators (Body Mass Index and Calories burned), forums, event calendars and there are also challenges you can join as well. Army Spouse Mary Langlinais says, "MapMyRun is great because it lets my sister, who is 2500 miles away, and I be an encouragement to one another by logging our runs and routes and holding one another accountable." This site can be found at mapmyfitness.com, and has a free app available for those with iPhones or Droids. In fact, this app is so versatile that it acts as a GPS during your workout; tracking not only where you are, but your pace as well.

DailyMile - Taking a page from Facebook, this site allows you to make and motivate friends from anywhere in the world. You can track workouts like running, yoga, weights, and cycling; with the option to not only add details of your workout, but photos and video as well. You can then use DailyMile to summarize your workouts, and the option to sync to Facebook and/or Twitter. This free site can be found at www.dailymile.com, and while there isn't a smart phone app, they have a simplified mobile browser version for internet ready phones.

Lose It! - This app is not only perfect for those wanting to track their food intake, but for those on the go. This extensive tool tracks your calories per meal, gives you your allotment for the day, and has a daily goal chart right there on the home screen. Not only is there an extensive food list available to you, but you also have the option of creating your own meal as well. Army spouse Julie Wilson mentions, "I liked that Lose It had an extensive database of nutritional facts for grocery foods as well as foods from some popular chain restaurants."  While this is only for those with access to apps on their phone, the addition has been nothing but positive.
