Hitting the Links in Pierce County

Dust off your golf bag and clean up the clubs. It is time to hit the links.

As spring approaches, golf courses are gearing up with membership drives and special incentives for active duty military service members and their families. With dozens of Pierce County golf courses to choose from, here is a list of some of the public courses you may want to try out.  

Classic Golf Club

Course Description:  Located in Spanaway, this 6,902 yard, 18-hole, par 72 course has fairways and greens of bent grass.  

Military rates:  18 holes - $25 Mon-Fri; $38 weekend and holidays; $25 for 9 holes; and $28 for cart rental.

Programs: This course has men's and women's clubs.  The Men's Club Memberships include: Classic Men's Club - $39.95 - benefits: USGA Handicap; Classic Player's Club - $100.00 - benefits: Discounted green fees ($8 to $12 discount); Classic Player's Club and Men's Club  - $139.95 - includes all Men's Club and Player's Club Benefits, plus one free round of golf Monday through Friday or one weekend round after noon.  

Lake Spanaway Golf Course

Course description: Located in Tacoma, this course is maintained by the Parks and Recreation Services division of Pierce County and is managed by Premier Golf Centers LLC. The course is 7,014 yards long. The course contains Douglas Fir-lined fairways and large greens. It also contains a covered and lighted driving range.  

Military rates:  9 holes $11 weekday and $16 weekend; 18 holes $16 weekday and $26 weekend.  Carts are $13 per person.

Brookdale Golf Club

Course description:  Established in 1931, this 18-hole Spanaway course has challenging fairways and fast greens. 

Military rates: 9 holes $15 and 18 holes $22 weekdays only. Carts cost $10 for 9 holes, and $24 for 18 holes.

Chambers Bay Golf Course

Course description: This University Place golf course is located on 950 acres along the Puget Sound. A true links course - characterized by location along a major body of water, few trees, sandy soil, open layout, little water, and seaside grass - Chambers Bay will host the 2010 U.S. Amateur Golf Tournament and the 2015 U.S. Open Championship. This course is not recommended for inexperienced golfers. 

Military rates:  The rates at this course are cheaper for Pierce County residents. Weekdays in Feb. and March cost $59 and weekends and holiday rates are $69. April rates are $69 for weekdays and $89 for weekends and holidays.  

Meadow Park Golf Course

Course description: A Metro Parks Tacoma golf course, Meadow Park includes an 18-hole championship course, an executive 9-hole course and a partially covered and lighted driving range. 

Military rates:  This course has several rate choices for all potential golfers, including a 7 day annual pass for $1,760; a punch card for 10 rounds for $269 for adults and $219 for junior players; a Player Improvement Plan membership for $150 a year for ages 4-22 (gives junior players discounts such as $1 for up to 3 large buckets of balls a day), unlimited golf on the championship course (Monday through Thursday) for $5 and (Friday through Sunday) $12, unlimited play on the 9-hole course for $1 per round and discounts on all camps and clinics.

Oak Brook Golf and Country Club

Course description: Opened in 1967, Oakbrook has fir and oak trees lining fairways and 56 bunkers.  The signature hole is 13, a 172-yard par 3 that has water on the front right and bunkers on the left and right. 

Military rates: This course has reduced the initiation fee from $2,500 to $100 for active duty service members.  On top of this fee is a monthly rate of $285 and a with spouse rate of $335, a minimum dining charge of $45 a month, $15 per child, and $15 a month for unlimited range balls.  Membership at this golf course is from month to month. Membership can be cancelled at any time. Membership fees for soldiers who deploy are stopped during deployments without penalty.
