For some spouses, a rose for every year of marriage, a candlelight dinner, jewelry, or a night on the town may be in the works for Valentine's Day 2010.

But for thousands of spouses from Joint Base Lewis-McChord married to deployed servicemembers,  Feb. 14 may not be quite so romantic.  For these women, Valentine's Day will be just another poignant reminder of their spouse's absence.

With that in mind, the staff of The Fort Lewis Ranger and The Northwest Airlifter have spent months planning a day of pampering for the wives of deployed military servicemembers.

"The event is our way of showing support to the soldiers who are serving our country," Ken Swarner, one of the event sponsors said.

The Valentine's Day of Pampering event is from 2 to 6 p.m. Feb. 14 at the St. Martin's University Pavilion. All military spouses, girlfriends and boyfriends are welcome as long as they have RSVP'd here. Military spouses on the guest list must show a military identification card at the door, and significant others must give the name of their loved ones rank and unit to be admitted free of charge. Non-military spouses, teenage daughters, and their significant others are welcome for a cost of $10.

Alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks can be purchased at the nonprofit event. All money collected will be used to offset the cost of the festivities.

The event also features a fashion show hosted by Vixen's House of Shoes and Apparel in Tacoma, which features spouses of deployed military servicemembers. Other event activities include a hypnotist, tarot card readers, entertainment, massage and other spa treatments, food, cooking and dance classes, wine classes, door prizes, jewelry making, photographs, hair styling and makeovers.

The event is a way for companies to give back, said Tammy Steele, a senior sales director for Mary Kay Cosmetics, who will be participating in the event. Mary Kay will distribute goody bags filled with candy and samples, as well as treat spouses to beauty care at four stations, focusing on hand care, skin care, glamour and fragrances, she said.

"We want to pamper them as much as we can in the few short minutes we will have with each one," she said.

In addition to organizations donating their goods and services, there will be a merchant area where organizations will set up and share their wares and services, including jewelry, personal care, financial services and clothing.

Door prizes will be handed out every 10 to 15 minutes during the four hour event and include free massage, spa treatments, gift baskets, dinners, and more.  A drawing for an overnight stay at the Alderbrook Resort on Hood Canal will also be awarded.

Food at the event is free of charge.  Local eateries including Three Chicks Catering (www.threechickscatering.com), Vinum Coffee and Wine Lounge, Bull Market Bar & Grill in the Paradise Village Bowl & Casino (www.paradisebowlonline.com) and Mandolin Café (www.themandolincafe.com) will provide a variety of finger foods for attendees to sample.

Child care for the event is completely booked. Children are not allowed into the event.  Private arrangements must be made for children who have not already been registered. If you have already registered for daycare, your child will receive child care.
