Hey, McConaughey is coming to the Washington State History Museum in Tacoma! I wonder if he'll talk about his Oscar-winning performance in Dallas Buyers Club, or his role on the stunning HBO series True Detective. Wait, what's that? Matthew McConaughey is not coming to Tacoma? It's actually Dr. Lorraine McConaghy that will be at the museum? And she'll be speaking about scoundrels of the American Civil War who resided here in our corner of the world? OK, that's still pretty cool! Her presentation is part of the exhibit "Civil War Pathways in the Pacific Northwest," which Dr. McConaghy curates. She'll discuss how the issues and characters of that war actually effected the development of Washington Territory, despite being far-removed from the action. The issues of the Civil War were divisive, a time of "confused loyalties, unbridled ambition, bloody violence, and fundamental shifts in politics and economics - a good time for rogues." The program examines some of our best worst scoundrels from that period, including pro-Confederate highwaymen, pro-Union vigilantes, traitors, white supremacists, Knights of the Golden Circle and self-interested opportunists. But do you know who would've been qualified to clean up that gallery of villains? Rust Cohle - Matthew McConaughey's character on True Detective, that's who!
