As you read in the Weekly Volcano, the Squeak and Squawk Music Festival kicked off Thursday. Bands from all over the Northwest and beyond will be stopping in Tacoma to unleash their magic Sept. 12-16. Below is the schedule for Thursday, Sept. 12.

All Ages, 6-9 p.m., $7
Library at Sanford and Son
743 Broadway, Tacoma

>>> THE FAME RIOT

Two glam-rock brothers draw inspiration from genre-hoppers like Foxy Shazam and dance-rock like Hot Chip, with an impeccable pop sheen.

>>> Xylophones

This indie rock two-piece is finds a nice middle ground between minimalist folk-rock and the bare indie pop sensibilities of godfathers like Death Cab For Cutie and David Bazan.

>>> J. Martin

New Swoon Records signee, J. Martin, walks the line between folk-rock and gentle psychedelic flair.

21+, 9 p.m., $7
The New Frontier Lounge
301 E. 25th St., Tacoma

>>> People Under the Sun

Vintage synthesizers and psychedelic drone combine for a band that calls to mind Kraftwerk and Echo and the Bunnymen.

>>> Week of Wonders

Their way of describing themselves-"tropical punk"-is right on the money, reflecting their calypso rhythms and sprightly guitars, as well as their boundless energy.

>>> I Like Science

This blend of art-rock and Krautrock hypnotizes with repetitive progressions and spaced-out subject matter.
