Music and Art in Wright Park is back with 20 years under its belt and a musical line-up that will rock yours, your dad's and your kid's socks off.

Girl Trouble, Kramer, Wheelies, The Purrs and Mahnhammer are just a few of the 14 bands set to play this Saturday from noon to 7 p.m. in Tacoma's Wright Park.

"We have everything from pop rock to death core - it's a really big spectrum of music," said Cody Foster, co-director. "You know, our generation of music, we've listened to punk rock and metal and now most all of us have kids," he said. "So many things are deemed kid's events and none of them rock - I wanted to put something together that's palatable."

And he has. Together with a crew of volunteers and sponsors, Foster has created an event that features 30 arts and crafts vendors, food booths and kid's activities, making MAWP a community favorite:  last year's event brought in 2,500 people.

Music is a huge part of the draw, but something is to be said about that second letter in the acronym MAWP.

In addition to dozens of vendors offering handmade arts and crafts, two featured artists - Tacoma's own Booger Red and Julie Luke - will create their work in a live setting. Booger Red's distinct spray painting style has an ethereal, spacey quality and Luke's bold, contrasting patterns and colors create whimsical, unique paintings.

"The event is really taking shape," Foster said, "and it's continuing to grow."

A new art director, Rob Zinkevich, is part of the growth process and Foster said to expect bigger and better arts in the years to come.

"He's the missing link," Foster said of Zinkevich, who is working on a full-sized art gallery for next year.

After 20 years, MAWP is Tacoma tradition in its finest form, with an emphasis on the DIY, indie spirit of a blue-collar community that knows its roots. And from the sounds of it - it will last 20 more.

"It's an old-school event with true community at its heart," Foster said. "It's a free event for everybody."
