What does a women do if she began gymnastics at age 3, was her local high school mascot "Bouncing Beaver" by age 5 and as an adult, after years of flexibility training and stage performance, participated in square, folk, cabaret and belly dancing? What is the next level for her?

She starts a burlesque troupe, of course.

Ms. May B. Naughty formed Rock Candy Burlesque in November 2011 and on March 30, 2012 the Olympia-based troupe performed its first show, "Material Girls," a tribute to Madonna.

Since then, the group has grown by four members and numerous fans. In addition to burlesque, the 12-member troupe - 10 performers, two stage hands - sing, dress in drag, strip, and perform tap and belly dance.

Friday, March 29, at The Royal Lounge in Olympia, Rock Candy presents "Icing on the Cake," a celebration of its first full year of tassels and tushes with a hard, sweet and sticky theme. There will be two shows that night followed by a down and dirty dance party.

"We will be presenting boobs! Lots and lots of them," says Naughty, tossing her head back in laughter. "In addition, we will be unveiling a very special surprise, there will be drink specials, and an after birthday party where you can shake your groove thing with the Rock Candy Girls and help us celebrate our first amazing year."

Naughty tells me Rock Candy is comprised of a plethora of performers from all walks of life and diverse creative and cultural backgrounds.

"Some of the members have been performing for many years, and some are just babies to this type of art," she says. "But, we all have a love of the stage and a desire for the burlesque flair. Olympia is an artsy community; we have been embraced and supported as we continue to produce shows. In return, we all work hard to produce fun shows that offer a variety of talents and styles of performance."

Naughty notes the Northwest is receptive to burlesque and that area influences include Miss Indigo Blue and the Academy of Burlesque, located in Seattle Washington and Olympia's Own Tush Burlesque, who have been very supportive of the girls.

A combined love of the trade and supportive audience members have made Rock Candy Burlesque a recognized entity in the community, and the troupe hopes for many more years of performance.

"Our desire is that the audience leaves with a smile on their face and the desire to see more of ‘that'," says Naughty. "Each audience member is going to enjoy different aspects of the show. We present acts from classic to eclectic, feminine to gender bending, classy to raunchy, sultry to energetic. We strive to bring out the inner-sexy in everybody."
