Friday, in Olympia, from 5-7 p.m., there is an art signing benefit for Safeplace put on by Compass Rose. This is the boutique's fifth time bringing in local artist and author Nikki McClure for signings to benefit the agency. Artist Mimi Williams will bring her whimsical linoleum block prints. The suggested donation is $5 per item signed. Attendees are welcome to bring their own items, or purchase them from the store - think early holiday shopping.

"People get really excited," says Liz Van Dyke, manager. "A lot of people buy Nikki McClure's calendar and get it signed."

Van Dyke even tells me that one three-generation group of women come every year, going to dinner and making it a special family event.

Making this a tradition could generate a lot of money for Safeplace, says Van Dyke, who also says a representative from Safeplace will attend, passing out information and answer questions about the non-profit that is the only advocacy agency and confidential shelter for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Thurston County.

"I think it's great when we see downtown businesses support non-profits," says Van Dyke. "I think it shows a lot about our community."
