On the list of important things in life, eating and education are near the top. One is a matter of survival in the truest sense of the word, and the other isn't far behind. Saturday an annual event at Saint Martin's University in Lacey combines both - as superstar TV chef Mario Batali hosts the college's 2011 Gala, described as "an annual black-tie affair benefiting student scholarships." Attendees (who obviously registered and paid the $200 ticket price some time ago, as the event is sold out) will enjoy what's described as an "entertaining culinary demonstration" from Batali, in addition to a five-course meal designed by the chef and matched with the perfect wine. Those without tickets and feeling left can take solace in an additional chance to meet Batali earlier Saturday, at a "Meet the Chef" event from 3-5 p.m. at the Saint Martin's O'Grady Library. Limited to 150 attendees, tickets for the "Meet the Chef" event also run $200 and also benefit student scholarships.
