Spirits in the Material World: "Uncle Boonmee"

A dying farmer in Thailand is watched over by family members and a caregiver in a home with walls open to the jungle. He receives visits from his dead wife and son, who are as real as anyone else at his bedside. He visits an enchanted cave he regards as the womb of his birth. The membrane between this world and the next is permeable. It is all that simple and peaceful, and it's probably futile to approach it on any other terms. Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes 2010. - Three and a half out of four stars
