TIKI LOGIC: Cody Foster vs. his sideburns

It’s a new week, which means it’s time for a new installment of Bobble Tiki’s South Sound music news and notes column. Without further ado, let’s get rolling…

With the capitalist Christmas onslaught about to be unleashed, Bobble Tiki likes to take moments like these — before the storm — to think about the truly decent and beautiful things in life — things that have absolutely nothing to do with racking up monster credit card bills just to fill out the space under the tree.

Just such a reassuring scenario can be found this Saturday night at Hell’s Kitchen, when My Life in Black and White, Neutralboy, The Hollowpoints and Cody Foster’s Army play a benefit for Broken Oars frontman Ike Shanaman — who faces monster medical bills. You can read all about it on page 17.

Tacomans who know Cody Foster’s Army no doubt know Cody Foster, which means they also know his famous big red sideburns. Besides blistering metal, they’re one of the band’s trademarks.

Well, in a show of solidarity, Foster — to aid his friend Shanaman — will be auctioning off his sideburns, literally, to the highest bidder at Hell’s Kitchen Saturday night. This means some lucky person will have the chance to personally shave the big, fluffy beasts off Foster’s well-known mug. Gestures like this shouldn’t go unnoticed — and the friendships that inspire them are the backbone of T-town.

Moving on, Vicci Martinez is a big name in Tacoma. Chances are you’ve already read on page 23 about the MOVE! 15 show coming up this Friday and Saturday that Martinez arranged/composed and performed its musical score.

Well, speaking of Martinez, in addition to her work with choreographer Kate Monthy to produce the upcoming MOVE! 15 performances, the singer-songwriter recently wrote a song for the indie flick Hannah Free with singer-songwriter Blaire Hansen of San Francisco. A drama built on a long-term lesbian relationship in Midwest America, the film is receiving rave reviews.

Sweetening the deal, Hansen and Martinez have now also been nominated for an award at the Out Music Awards in New York City — which will go down in early December. It’s a super cool honor, and one Martinez’s work with Hansen deserves. From everyone here at the Weekly Volcano, good luck Vicci!
