Celebrating ten years in the game, Thes One and Double K, both MCs and producers, step correct on their seventh album and first release on Gold Dust Media, which just also dropped records from some of the best still rockin' in 08 (Large Pro, Planet Asia & DJ Muggs). Having delivered nothing but solid albums since 1998's The Next Step and blessing multiple compilations with standout cuts (see Impeach the Precident), People Under the Stairs succeeds once again with Fun DMC. Although they don't miss a beat on the lyrical tip, the best thing about this release is the production. Pulling samples from a multitude of genres, this album lacks a consistent sound but flows well and is like a voyage through eclectic record crates. While some tracks are laced with classic old school drum loops, others are slower, producing a record you could either kick it to or dance to. Fun DMC embodies an era that pays tribute to the roots of hip hop culture while staying innovative, also represented by extended crew Giant Panda and Crown City Rockers. PUTS put it down for the West, keeping hip hop alive and feeding starving heads in 2008 with the funk we need and love.
