Adult prom

Sanford and Son Antiques hosts sailors, mermaids and Girl Trouble

Bobble Tiki’s high school prom isn’t exactly an event he holds fond memories of. At 17, Bobble Tiki was the definition of awkward. Bobble Tiki’s face was oily, his clothes were cheesy, and his palms sweat like crazy every time he talked to a member of the opposite sex. While all that has changed with age for Bobble Tiki (except the cheesy clothes part), in high school — and especially at the prom — Bobble Tiki was a mess. Add all that inner awkwardness to the fact that Bobble Tiki has no actual feet — and just sways to-and-fro on a spring like contraption, making it awfully hard to slow dance — and Bobble Tiki’s high school prom made for one forgettable evening.

This Saturday, Oct. 18, though, the fine folks at Sanford and Son Antiques are giving Bobble Tiki an opportunity to make new memories — prom memories, not full of suckiness and self-loathing.

Aided by the soothing sounds of famous Tacoma band Girl Trouble, with help from rockin’ blues band the Toughtimes and DJ Infinity, prom at the Library at Sanford and Son on Saturday is sure to be an event everyone will be talking about for weekends to come. Based on the success of last year’s Sanford and Son prom, at least, it seems Bobble Tiki isn’t the only slouch in Tacoma who’d like to make a few new positive prom memories.

What’s the deal with prom at Sanford and Son, you ask?

“The idea of a prom came about between friends, (myself and Lark Gallery co-owner Gretchen Bailey),” explains Sanford and Son’s Cheryl Gorsuch. “We just thought what a great time it would be to have an adult prom, an event that you could dress up for and dance to some great music by local bands. This is the second Prom and we are planning on continuing with the tradition each year.”

With a lineup that includes, perhaps, the best band in Tacoma’s history — Girl Trouble (though Bobble Tiki is sure they’d balk at such a claim) — not to mention the Toughtimes and DJ Infinity, who showed his immense DJ skills at last year’s prom, there’s more reason to get excited about the Sanford and Son Prom than simply the prospect of dressing up and pinning a corsage on your date’s rack.

“Well, the lineup has to have Girl Trouble. I mean, they are a Tacoma institution,” says Gorsuch. “They are the band everyone wants to play at their prom.”

Indeed. Bobble Tiki’s awkward-ass high school prom would have been so much less lame had Girl Trouble played. For that reason alone Bobble Tiki knows Saturday’s prom at Sanford and Son is a sure bet for fun. Add the music to the fact proceeds will go to the Companion Animal Rescue Society (CARS), and you’ve got an event worth its weight in sequins.

“(CARS is) a no-kill society that takes rescued animals into foster homes until they’re adopted. We chose them because we wanted a local organization that was in need — an organization that doesn’t get all of the press coverage, and an organization that isn’t as well known as others,” says Gorsuch.

“We are expecting a large amount of local folks and tons of folks from out of town to come together for a great time of dancing, music, prom photos, tattoos, a hickey or two, and some great memories.”

This year’s Sanford and Son prom has a nautical theme, so keep that in mind when planning your attire. Also keep in mind that tickets (which are $20 in advance and $25 at the door) do sell out. Bobble Tiki recommends you act fast if you want to get in on this year’s prom action.

But, as usual, Bobble Tiki doesn’t care what you do this week because he doesn’t even know you. Unless you can tell Bobble Tiki where the most convenient exit is to get off the Seahawks’ bandwagon, then Bobble Tiki is pretty sure he doesn’t want to meet you. Check out www.weeeklyvolcano.com for all your South Sound worldwide Interweb needs, and consider that good enough. If you got any closer to Bobble Tiki you could see the boxed wine stain on his shirt.
