How shall we mark the passage from late summer into fall and early winter this year? The choices available to Washingtonians are, as ever, many. Some represent long but enduring traditions that would be a shame to miss. Others represent newcomers to the event calendar lineup. Here are a few suggestions. More complete listings are available at several travel and tourism-oriented Web sites, including www.traveltacoma.com and www.access.wa.gov.

Roy Pioneer Rodeo

Part 2 of the 2007 edition of this Puget Sound area tradition returns to the town of Roy Sept, 1-3, combining events ranging from bronco riding to steer wrestling and calf roping, bull riding and even, for those who prefer a little less action — cow milking. Visit www.royrodeo.com for more information and directions (the rodeo grounds are located off Highway 507 — the Spanaway McKenna Highway)

Puyallup Fair

Beginning Sept. 7 and running through Sept. 23, “The Fair” returns to its longtime home in Puyallup. Returning traditions include the maze of amusement park rides on the midway, rows of arcade games, domestic and livestock competitions, the fair’s own rodeo and entertainment lineup, and more. Call 253.841.5045 or visit www.thefair.com for more information.

Autumn Leaves Special Train

One way to mark the change of the season is to board this one-time 2007 event coming Oct. 6 in Elbe. The two-hour scenic train ride to the town of Divide is set to “follow the foliage” of the western Cascades, and includes refreshments. Reservations are recommended. The exact departure time is yet to be determined. Call 360.569.2351 for more information.
