Twinkle! Pop-Crush-Fizz

Tacoma Art Museum hosts sparkly adult soiree

So you wonder — as I do — how the Tacoma Art Museum will trump its community celebration, Glitter, Glisten, and Gleam, held several weeks ago.

First in the equation, leave the kids at home.  Next, add drag diva Sylvia O’Stayformore and DJ Vodka Twist. Add the band Lushy, performing with go-go dancing troupe Tangerine Tonic. Then throw in the Dockyard Derby Dames roller derby team Femme Fianna and let them roll in the museum plaza. How about a couple of artists painting live body builders? How about food and booze? Maybe even a specially-designed martini glass created by M Space.

And presto!

Twinkle! Pop-Crush-Fizz, an enchanted evening of grown-up art and culture held at the museum Friday, Aug. 24, beginning at 8 p.m.

“It’s going to be quite the departure from the usual family fun,” Tacoma Art Museum’s Public Relations Coordinator Alyssa Rosso promises. “It’s a new event, we’ve never done anything like this before; we’re curious to see how the audience reacts to it.”

The museum is hoping that by breaking this new ground, a fresh new crowd of hip cats will be exposed to museum culture who might not ordinarily peruse the art; maybe as they see the sort of vibrant fun that an exhibit like “Sparkle then Fade” offers these hipsters will feel at home and become members.

“We’re pretty excited about it,” Rosso says. “It’s new ground.”

She describes attire for the event as “cocktail” but on further description, it sounds like cocktail with a twist will be encouraged, especially if that twist contains sequins, rhinestones, bling, and make-up that helps celebrate along the lines of the theme of “Sparkle then Fade,” whose pieces focus on the “glitter side of celebrity,” according to Rosso.

And in the spirit of the glitter side of celebrity, prizes will be awarded for the most sparklicious outfits, with hostess Sylvia O’Stayformore awarding prizes through the evening and crowning a lucky, bright couple as Twinkle King and Queen.

The event is designed as a 21-and-older fundraiser for the museum, with room for 200 guests, unlike the larger cap for The Night Tacoma Danced, TAM’s major fundraiser.

Twinkle! Tickets will cost members $50, non-members $75. Those who purchase memberships for the night or members who upgrade memberships can be eligible to receive a free ticket.
