The day began with over 900 Soldiers and more than 100 family members formed up on Mustang Field. The weather was perfect for a run and at 0700 the first step was taken as the Mustang family began their two mile run with Soldiers, spouses, children and pets. As the largest battalion in the Lancer brigade made its way through the streets of North Fort their energy was contagious. The motivated family members and Soldier sang cadence as they ran down the streets passing their dogs to one another so they had an opportunity to run with their company guidon. The run ended back at Mustang Field where all family members were recognized with certificates of appreciation for their support of the run, the Mustang Battalion and their Soldier. After this recognition ceremony all were released to prepare for the next event.

At 1000 family members were greeted at the battalion headquarters by music and several pieces of equipment displayed for them to experience firsthand. The equipment included a Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle and the MRAP All-Terrain Vehicle (M-ATV), which our Soldiers will be using to secure convoys in Afghanistan. Other equipment on display, which Mustang Soldiers use daily, were a M984A4 Wrecker, a M1120 LHS with trailer, a HIPPO, M978 Fueler, an Armored Security Vehicle, an Expando Van, a Medical Evacuation Vehicle and a Stryker Command Vehicle. A HMMWV was also on display to show families the level of protection once offered in comparison to the protection of the M-ATV and MRAP. After family members had kicked the tires, honked the horns and truly experienced the equipment everyone's attention was directed toward LTC Chipchase and CSM Nemec as they presented awards from the Convoy Live Fire range conducted at Yakima Training Center. The awardees were broken down into four groups: Best Overall Execution of the Convoy Live Fire Exercise was Bravo Company, the Convoy live fire exercise top shot (day) was 2-1 LST, the Convoy live fire exercise top shot (night) was Alpha Company and the Convoy Live Fire Exercise Best Troop Leading Procedures went to Headquarters and Headquarters Company's Military Police Platoon. After the awards were passed out and the applause ended families and Soldiers turned their focus toward lunch.

The final event of Mustang Pride Day was a picnic lunch consisting of ribs, hot dogs, hamburgers and a variety of side items. Families and Soldiers shared this meal and took the opportunity to get to know one another as friends. At the end of the Mustang Pride Day a stronger bond existed.

Mustang Pride Day was a true success. The experience of a family run, multiple award ceremonies, a hands-on equipment display and a picnic strengthened the Mustang family and allowed family members an opportunity to gain a greater understanding of what their Soldiers do on a daily basis. While this event was designed to be a day for families the second and third order affects will sustain our Soldiers throughout their upcoming deployment.
