It’s a new week, which means it’s time for another installment of Bobble Tiki’s South Sound music news and notes column. Without further ado, let’s get rolling.

Why was Bobble Tiki the last person to know Top Heavy Crush is back? Not long ago, here in the pages of the Weekly Volcano, bassist Justin McDonald said the band was sonically branching out and thus holing up for a few months and changing names. Now, Bobble Tiki sees Top Heavy Crush on lineups all over town — including last week’s Stone Axe show at Hell’s Kitchen. What the deuce, people? Can nothing be counted on anymore? Bobble Tiki guesses not.

Still, the news pleases Bobble Tiki. A Tacoma without Top Heavy Crush is like a Tacoma without alcoholism and sub par education — a far less entertaining place.

Speaking of changes in the scene, the short-lived existence of Seafarers as a live music venue is officially over — and, actually, has been since early October. Bobble Tiki doesn’t know exactly what happened at the “B&I of bars,” but he has two suspicions regarding Seafarers musical demise. One involves the amazing amount of thankless work that goes into making a joint like Seafarers a music venue, and the other involves scurvy. Tough call.

Moving on, KUPS 90.1 FM — Tacoma’s beloved college radio station — wants a Woodie. Of course, when he says Woodie Bobble Tiki is talking about the awards handed out by mtvU. KUPS is currently in the top 5 in voting for the “College Radio Woodie,” which continues until Nov. 9 at mtvu.com. If you love KUPS like you should, go forth and vote — let your voice be heard.

Schwing!

Finally, be sure to check out the two Brian Redman memorial benefits this weekend at Hell’s Kitchen. On Saturday one of Redman’s former bands, 3 Inches of Blood, will tear up Hell’s Kitchen in honor of the fallen T-town legend. Then on Sunday Owen Heart, Book of Black Earth, Poverty Bay Saints, Crooks to Kings and Cowardice will do the same. It’s obviously shitty that it comes under these circumstances, but Bobble Tiki is sure Redman appreciates all the ball rattling rock being offered up in his name. If you miss it you might very well be dumb.
