TIKI LOGIC: Motopony CD release party

A lot of anger in Tacoma, at least online

It’s a new week, which means it’s time for a new installment of Bobble Tiki’s South Sound music news and notes column. Without further ado, let’s get rolling. …

Two weeks ago, the Weekly Volcano’s Mark Thomas Deming wrote a cover story about Daniel Blue and his band Motopony’s CD release show, Saturday, Nov. 14 at Urban Grace Church in Tacoma. As many in our City of Destiny can attest to, Daniel Blue is nothing if not a lightning rod for attention and hyper-local mud slinging. And there’s no doubt Blue — through convenient prominence, artistic persistence and certainly self-promotion — has largely created the situation. He’s a self-made poster boy, and boy does that rub a lot of folks wrong.

That said, there’s something downright disturbing and oddly fascinating about the reactions Blue’s mere mention rouses in Tacoma. Lots of folks adore his every move, it seems — but just as many hate Mr. Blue and everything he stands for with vehement zeal. Most of these people also seem to hate the Weekly Volcano for writing about Daniel Blue and putting him on the cover, but that’s to be expected. Most of these people don’t seem to remember previous cover stories with Girl Trouble, Don’t Tell Sophie, Andrew Foard and Durango 95 and The Nightgowns — to name but a few.

While Bobble Tiki envisioned including a sampling of the downright absurd and nasty Daniel Blue comments piling up on the Volcano’s Web site, Bobble Tiki just took a moment to look through the comments again and it literally made Bobble Tiki nauseas. Try it if you dare. There’s a lot of anger in Tacoma — at least online.

The bottom line is, according to Bobble Tiki: Whether you like Daniel Blue or not, or think he has an ounce of talent — and YOU ARE entitled to your opinion — the anonymity of the Internet is no excuse for saying shit you wouldn’t have the nuts to say in real life. That’s a rule everyone should live by.

Daniel Blue and Motopony will be at Urban Grace in Tacoma on Saturday, debuting a new record. The 1,645 and counting shit talking commenters on weeklyvolcano.com are surely invited to share their opinions in person.

But Bobble Tiki wouldn’t count on it.
