Les Nymphes

Lost in a mist, prepare for an interdimensional journey with Martin Rev's new album, Les Nymphes. Featuring analogue sounds ranging from gut-wrenching death-ray bass, to sweeping crystalline pads, to leads played by Zeus' lightning bolts themselves, the album ranges in genre from psy-dance to electro Latin jazz and everywhere in between. The journey starts in a Super Nintendo rendition of a film noir soundtrack and quickly leaves the city for a quick orbit around Earth as the listener is treated to a few loop-driven, heavily phased dance tracks. Then off to a more terrestrial setting for an unsettling walk around the park composed of wandering, ambient tracks often interspersed with vocals from beyond the grave. The album takes a quick detour into what appears to be an electronic interpretation of Grecian and Latin music before hopping back on the shuttle to return to the city streets where it started. The final track is perhaps the most interesting, resembling a crazed jog through downtown past a variety of night clubs, as distinct musical phrases briefly become apparent from their disorganized ambient background before returning to incoherency. Les Nymphes offers a bizarre, but satisfying musical experience for the adventurous listener.
