Roughly 3,000 Soldiers and Airmen gathered to celebrate Single Service Member Day at Shoreline Beach Sept. 6 - the program's most popular event this year.

"(Single Service Member Day) was established to thank and recognize all the hard work that they do every day," said Spc. Sable Myers, now president of the joint base's Better Opportunities for Single Service (Members) program, also known as BOSS.

BOSS members and civilian volunteers coordinated for live entertainment, jousting, a gyroscope ride, karaoke, free food and beverages, and more.

"It is really cool to see the community support the single Soldiers," Spc. Meaghan Dansie, a medic with 62nd Medical Brigade said. "It is important to keep the morale up."

Myers said she and fellow BOSS members hope the event at Shoreline Beach will draw more participants to other events including volunteers for the program's community service projects.

"This event makes me want to go do more BOSS events," Pfc. Kyla McGregor, another medic with 62nd Med. Bde. said. "Today was organized fun, with a lot of things to do."

Some service members just enjoyed the day off and the opportunity to meet other Soldiers and Airmen.

"I got to meet people from all over post and got time off to enjoy the day," said Spc. Devon McBride, a Chinook helicopter repairer for 5th Battalion, 5th Air Defense Artillery Regiment.

Myers said service members and Department of Defense civilians who want to participate in BOSS events, or volunteer in community activities, should contact their unit's BOSS representative for information. BOSS is always welcoming new members and volunteers.

"We serve our country in and out of uniform, so this day was to say ‘thank you' to all the service members for their hard work," Myers said.
