ANCIENT WARLOCKS: Stoner rockers.

I need to get my hot little hands on the upcoming split 7-inch release by Mos Generator and Ancient Warlocks. If they can put all the power and straight fucking rock they pull at their live performances onto a little piece of vinyl, then I'm sold.

I apologize for dropping the f-bomb so early in an article, but honest-to-god, listening to these bands makes me want to cuss up a storm. It's that kind of cussing studies have shown is good for you because it's evoked from pure feeling. It's primal.

Anyway, both of these badass motherfucking bands are playing The New Frontier Saturday, along with C.F.A. and Furry Buddies. Yes, it's a record release party, and yes it's going to rule.

As far as previewing the 7-inch, most of my exposure has been to Mos Generator, but my attention this week is Seattle stompers, Ancient Warlocks. The band is Aaron Krause on lead vocals and lead guitar, Darren Chase on rhythm guitar, Anthony "Oni" Timm on bass and Steve Jones on drums.

Ancient Warlocks have only been around since 2010, but have been received with open arms and open tall boys by reputable music reviewers and discerning fans alike. A recent house show in Olympia laid the crowd out, their innards penetrated by the hard hitting riffs and occasional brown note Ancient Warlocks summoned up.

While I'm quick to say Ancient Warlocks is stoner rock - lyrics such as "so heavy ... too heavy to hold" might back me up on this one - it might not be fair to the classic rock sound the band also encompasses. Think Sabbath and Motorhead.

Guitarist Darren Chase agrees there is a certain degree of classic rock, but while he can't speak for the rest of the band, he says he's embraced the stoner rock.

"I wear it on my sleeve," he says.

And he wears it well. The whole band wears it. They chug and churn out steady rhythms and riffs like nobody's business. They could be the dirty love child of Fu Manchu and The Bronze.

At the end of the day, regardless if Ancient Warlocks is classic rock or stoner rock, it's rock right where it belongs - in your head and in your bones.

While this 7-inch release is live recordings - Ancient Warlocks in the studio, Mos Generator at Roadburn Festival - Chase reveals that they have a full-length album complete; fully recorded and mixed and waiting in the in-boxes of Ripple, Good to Die and Sub Pop Records.

Chase says they hope to have the release available by late summer/early fall with a tour to follow.

In the meantime, the band continues to play shows, and pound out new songs for their next release - "we're just gonna lay 'em down and see what happens," Chase says. He mentions they may even start introducing a new song or two to audiences. "We've had several kicking around for awhile," he says.

No matter what Ancient Warlocks future plans are, no matter what label releases them, no matter what genre they're classified as, I can only believe it will all be fucking awesome, and I'm excited to see what's next for the band that's steadily flashing on the rock 'n' roll radar.
