September 11 memorial events around the South Sound

On the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the South Sound  area will hold several events to honor the victims of that tragic day and bring together people of different ages, backgrounds and faiths. Here is a schedule of the events in Pierce and Thurston counties.

Tacoma Fire Department’s Honor Guard will host a remembrance ceremony at 9:30 a.m. at the Tacoma Firefighters Memorial, 3301 Ruston Way. Nonperishable food items will be collected for Pierce County Emergency Food Network.

Operation Homefront will again be coordinating the Freedom Walk in Tacoma. The event will happen across the country throughout the day. At 1 p.m. registration for the walk begins at Thea Park, along Dock Street. The walk itself will start at 2:30 p.m. To register (cost is $5 per walker over the age of 12), click here.

From 1 to 3 p.m., visit the capitol's General Administration Building's steps in Olympia, west campus, near the Law Enforcement Memorial. The Remembering 9/11 event is sponsored by the Behind the Badge Foundation and is open to the public at no charge.

The Olympia Choral Society will perform Mozart’s “Requiem” at 3 p.m. at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts, 512 Washington St. S.E., Olympia.

The Northwest Repertory Singers will commemorate 9/11 with Mozart’s “Requiem” at 4 p.m. at Mason United Methodist Church, 2710 N. Madison St., Tacoma.

A Building Hope and Blues Vespers will take place at 5 p.m. at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 901 N. J St., Tacoma. The event is a music performance with poetry, prayer and a brief reflection. It is free but donations will be accepted for the Habitat Humanity International projects in Guatemala.

At 7 p.m., come to the Temple Theater in Tacoma for the Together We Stand benefit concert. There will be performances by prominent acts like former Beach Boys member Dr. Chuck Stevens, the band Shambala and Billboard-recognized vocalist Tey Punsalan. Proceeds will go to benefit the non-profit VetsMeetVets' mission to end veteran suicide. Concert tickets are $28; tickets to the concert and pre-show reception to meet the artists are $58.
