Cue passing tumbleweeds …

In the beginning of the new world, all were sinners. Criminals ran rampant. The land untamed, riddled with lust, greed, debauchery and bullet holes. These were the ways of the West, and through the darkness of this landscape only one person could set the right from wrong. This is the legend of god’s gun.

The passage above opens Spindrift’s forthcoming record, aptly titled The Legend of God’s Gun, which will officially see the light of day July 21 — though, like a chapped and saddle sore cowboy, this won’t exactly be the record’s first ride.

Let me explain …

Spindrift is more than a band. Crafted by leader, singer, guitarist and visionary Kirpatrick Thomas, Spindrift is an amalgamation of psychedelic sounds and spaghetti Western flicks — the result resonating and shape-shifting like nothing you’ve ever heard or seen before. Think  Sergio Leone and Ennio Morricone, spliced with Jim Morrison, the Velvet Underground, Brian Jonestown Massacre and the Dandy Warhols.

What started as an experimental rock outfit from Delaware more than 15 years ago has become a large and ever-evolving collective of musicians — reflecting the limitless possibilities of sound and presentation when harnessed by a band with a pure and artistic vision. The Legend of God’s Gun — the record — originally surfaced in 2003, and, thanks to its entrancing and scene-setting vibe, ended up inspiring a movie by the same name, directed by Mike Bruce with help from Spindrift’s Thomas.

While The Legend of God’s Gun originally saw the light of day six years ago, to date the record has never officially been released. That will all change in July when Tee Pee Records makes the moody, dusty and often instrumental effort available to the masses.

“We are doing something unique, and I think that appeals to people,” Spindrift bassist Henry Evans told me late last year. “Spindrift is a band that celebrates the mythology of America and the drama of the West. It resonates with people. And we try our best to have a blast every time we play.”
