The Get Off

Rockin’, sexy duo don’t pull any punches

It’s cold outside, Tacoma, and Bobble Tiki can feel it throughout his Tiki body. Bobble Tiki’s bones are aching, and his motivation is lacking. All Bobble Tiki can seem to do is stare out his tiny Tiki office window and dream of a warmer, dryer place to go home every night and pass out on boxed wine.

But not everything is so bleak. While it might be cold outside, Tacoma’s music scene right now is hotter than hot. The success of last week’s Squeak and Squawk Music Festival is proof of that fact, and the bevy of quality shows happening around Grit City this weekend only furthers the notion.

One of the best, sexiest, and most rockin’ shows scheduled to go down this week will happen at Bob’s Java Jive on Friday, Oct. 24, when Seattle’s The Get Off make the trip south to bestow their brand of garage punk goodness on Tacoma.

Made up of only two members, drummer Mario and singer/guitarist/femme fatal rock and roll bombshell Leigh, The Get Off is about as tight as a band can get — as you’ll find out below. Bobble Tiki caught up with Leigh this week to get her thoughts on The Get Off’s upcoming show at Bob’s Java Jive.

BOBBLE TIKI: Talk to Bobble Tiki about your recording situation. Bobble Tiki knows you’ve been working on a couple of EPs for a while. Are you still hoping to get them out sometime this fall?

LEIGH: We have recorded 11 songs and how they’ll be released has yet to be determined. We may start looking for a label or not. The EP Uno and the Love EP (were recorded) at different studios. We hope to release EP Uno on white vinyl as a mini LP 12-inch at 45rpm to retain all that yummy analog sound. As for a CD, we may keep the entire album available for download only. CDs suck!

TIKI: Do you guys have a sound goal in mind when you write and record?

LEIGH: Our sound goal is LIVE LIVE LIVE. What you hear on an album is what you will hear at the Java Jive. I’m not a fan of loops. As a two-piece there should be space! And people respond to that.

TIKI: How do you guys work creatively? What are the advantages and disadvantages of a two-person band? How do you guys feed off each other?

LEIGH: We are rock and roll. We are lovers. We are The Get Off! We will only ever experience this magic as the two of us. Together forever!

TIKI: What are you expecting from Bob’s Java Jive? What has your impression of Tacoma been so far?

LEIGH: Oh the Java Jive — can’t wait to come back. We love T-town. The music scene is awesome, everyone supports one another, comes out to shows and gets crazy!

TIKI: What does the future hold for The Get Off?

LEIGH: The Get Off plans to bring the rock and roll wherever they go! We’ve talked about a salon tour. Yep, hair salons in conjunction with art shows and such! Why not, bars are getting boring and as a fine-ass two piece we can fit in just about any little salon corner.

TIKI: What is The Get Off’s favorite thing to do on a cold and rainy Northwest afternoon.

LEIGH: We fuck.

As usual, Bobble Tiki doesn’t care what you do this week because he doesn’t even know you. Unless you can tell Bobble Tiki why the bums in Wright Park seem to drink better hooch than Bobble Tiki ever does, than he’s pretty sure he’d like to keep it that way. Check out www.weeklyvolcano.com for all your South Sound Internet needs, and consider that close enough. If you got any closer to Bobble Tiki you could smell the apathy on his breath.
