Collaboration is the name of the game for two local entrepreneurs and jewelry designers. Sydney England and Charmaine Norton have taken friendship and the need for quality time together to a whole new level. Each has a separate business entity — Sydney England Jewelry and ShinyPretty, respectively. For festivals and shows, they work as a team covering a broad range of styles. Their creations range from delicate, classy and refined pieces to funky and substantial ones that are all unique, versatile and timeless.

England has worked primarily in wedding related jewelry design since 2000, and Norton began creating her own designs around 2005. Life, nature, the texture or lines of a material she’s working with offer inspiration for Norton while England confesses to being inspired by “literally everything — a new sweater, or color combination I’ve seen somewhere, or even just a new bead.” Both find inspiration in current fashion trends in the world but adapt and re-create them to their own styles to keep it fresh. Not afraid to do some research to acquire quality items, England and Norton work with a vendor they trust to get their gemstones directly from India. The two Tacoma residents then make their items by hand with the exclusion of some basic parts.

“I am proud to say, though, that the majority of my fine silver pieces were handmade by me,” England shares, adding that form and quality, and what will make her pieces most financially responsible for her clients are also very important.

Necklaces, earrings, bracelets, anklets, and more are crafted by England and Norton mostly out of fine silver, sterling silver, gold filled pieces, semiprecious and precious gemstones, opulent freshwater pearls, dazzling Swarovski crystals, luscious natural stones, and some glass beads. Norton dabbles a bit more organically with wood and bone beads for beautiful results.

“We are also hoping that a few of our pieces will be on display at Calla Lily Designs for the two-day holiday shopping event,” says England.
