Rock and Roll Edge

Supernova Hair and Tattoo celebrates a grand reopening

Bobble Tiki loves him a good cup of coffee. Admittedly, Bobble Tiki has never really been amused when people use the phrase “loves him a …” but in the case of coffee, Bobble Tiki’s willing to let even the most annoying of vernaculars slide.

Bobble Tiki’s a quad shot kind of guy. He has been since the beginning. Good coffee helps Bobble Tiki make it through the day, and good coffee helps Bobble Tiki have the motivation to drag his groggy, boxed wine soaked Tiki head out of bed every morning.

When it comes to coffee in Tacoma, few if any do it better than Satellite Coffee on Division near Wright Park. Part of a group of hip local businesses that also includes Supernova Hair and Tattoo, Satellite Coffee will celebrate its one year birthday this Saturday, Nov. 1. At the very same time Supernova will celebrate what owner Pat Brown calls a “grand reopening.”

Since the people behind both businesses are close friends, and they all work together as a team, Supernova and Satellite will party together for the celebration, inviting Bob Wayne, along with Eddie Spaghetti and Ron Heathman of the Supersuckers (Heathman is a co-owner of Satellite, and Brown plays with Bob Wayne) to dish out some rock, while the masses are invited to check out upgrades made to Supernova and drink free French press coffee from upstairs.

Brilliant.

This sounds like Bobble Tiki’s kind of event. Musically, it’s the exact same lineup that played Satellite’s grand opening earlier this year — which was a kick-ass show in Bobble Tiki’s humble opinion. The grand reopening of Supernova should be no different. Bobble Tiki just can’t decide whether he’s more excited about the music or free coffee.

Supernova Hair and Tattoo and Satellite Coffee co-owner Pat Brown took a moment to explain some of the upgrades he’s recently made to Supernova that he’s excited to show off at Saturday’s grand reopening.

“When we opened Supernova we were on such a tight budget that we just kind of swung open the doors,” says Brown, who explains the new look Supernova will be “a little more kitschy” and “less like a garage sale, but keeping the rock and roll edge.”

“It has the same personality, but looks a little nicer,” says Brown. “It’s awesome. We’re excited.”

Ron Heathman, himself a co-owner of Satellite Coffee as well as guitarist for the Supersuckers, will perform at the grand reopening party with fellow Supersucker Eddie Spaghetti. Having just put the wraps on a new Supersuckers record (Get it Together, which is freakin’ awesome and will hit shelves in late November), Heathman is almost as excited about Satellite’s place in Tacoma as he is about his band’s 20th anniversary show which will go down Saturday, Nov 29 at the Showbox in Seattle with Zeke, Mudhoney and Green River.

“I’m stunned. It was a dream of mine,” says Heathman of opening a successful quality coffee shop in Tacoma. “For me, whether I ever see a dime I don’t care. I’m just glad Tacoma has taken to this place.”

Brown says a downtown location for Satellite is currently in the works, and Heathman says you can look for the typical Heathman/Spaghetti solo acoustic rock goodness that people have come to expect when the two Supersuckers get together on the side.

“We don’t really plan that stuff,” says Heathman. “I know the tunes.”

“It’s going to be a big bash,” says Brown. “We’re going to party until the music stops.”

As usual, Bobble Tiki doesn’t care what you do this week because he doesn’t even know you. Sorry about that. Unless you can tell Bobble Tiki where the beef is — and then have the beef actually be there — then he probably doesn’t want to meet you. Check out  www.weeklyvolcano.com for all your South Sound Internet needs, and consider that close enough. If you got any closer you could sense the desperation in Bobble Tiki’s body odor.
