Breakfast for dinner

I’m not a huge fan of cooking in the morning

A few weeks back, I ran into a friend at the grocery store during the late afternoon hours and asked her, “What’s for dinner?” “Breakfast!” she replied. Memories from when I was a kid bubbled to the surface. I remembered that occasionally my mom would serve breakfast for our dinner. How awesome was that? I thought my mom was just being really cool. Now that I am an adult, I’m fairly sure the poor thing was just tapped out for ideas.

I struggle with breakfast every weekday morning, because I need to eat something or I will pass out while doing my cross fit training at the Y. That’s some serious ass kicking, and you need to have some energy to keep that going. The problem is, I just don’t get hungry until I’ve been awake for at least an hour. That’s why weekends are the best for breakfast.

Saturdays and Sundays we get up, the husband makes coffee, we read the paper, and soon the hunger starts to set in. Our options are discussed. I make a pretty mean scramble and my Eggs Benedict doesn’t exactly suck. But the real reason we dine out for breakfast — the Bloody Mary’s. I could make them at home, but it just doesn’t seem … right. Actually, it’s not the Bloodies. I just hate cooking breakfast. The Bloodies are a bonus.

This past Sunday was my first time for breakfast at Puget Sound Pizza, and what a delight it was. The omelets were sizable, served with red potatoes and toast. The breakfast sandwich turned my head, but it was the Huevos Rancheros that tickled my fancy.

I chose for my eggs to be scrambled and they arrived atop of two corn tortillas with cheddar cheese, tomatoes, avocados, sour cream, red and green salsas on top. It was perfectly filling and tasty. My server gave me the choice of a mild or scorching hot Bloody Mary. I requested something in between. Not the best Bloody, but not the worst. I’ll be back.

The first weekend The Hub was open for breakfast the husband and I thought we would give the breakfast pizzas a whirl. LOVE the concept. No one else is serving breakfast pizza around here. I recently spoke with co-owner Carol Holder, and she mentioned they were taking the pizzas off the breakfast menu for a while. With a little tweaking, I hope she brings them back.

I know this will shock you, but we didn’t order Bloodies at The Hub. We ordered Mimosas. The juice tasted fresh, as did the crisp bubbles of the sparkling wine. Their proportion of juice to sparkling was just perfect. We will try the Bloodies next time for sure.

My next morning food adventure was on a Wednesday and way over in Brown’s Point. I say “way over” because I never think of Brown’s Point as a destination for food. Brown’s Point Diner is as  cliché a diner as you are ever going to get, but with a really nice view.

I ordered the “create your own scramble” with ham, mushrooms, onions, cheddar and jack cheese. Man, I do a nice job of ordering. These eggs were mighty good, and the accompanying shredded hash browns were cooked just right. No Bloody this day, unfortunately. It was a working breakfast. Come to think about it, I don’t think they serve hard liquor. Note to Brown’s Point Diner …

Tonight I think dinner will be breakfast! Try this on for size — Sandee’s Breakfast Pie: Fry up some shredded hash browns in a 12-inch pan (add some onions, peppers and mushrooms if you wish), add some crumbled bacon or pre-cooked sausage, pour six pre-whisked, salt and peppered eggs over the hash brown mixture and cook over medium heat until almost done. Finish under the broiler because the top will be gooey. Sprinkle with lots of shredded cheese until melted. Slice and serve. Yeah!

Eat out, Tacoma. We need your love.
