APPALOOSA: Ed Harris plays a sheriff and Viggo Mortensen is his deputy.  They travel the Old West, cleaning bad guys out of towns.  Appaloosa lives in dread of an evil rancher (Jeremy Irons).  A cute young miss in a fetching frock (Renee Zellweger) arrives in town on the stage.  It’s all atmospheric, touching, involving. Harris, as director, tells a story that may remind you of Lonesome Dove. (R) Three stars – RE

BATTLE IN SEATTLE: Takes the actual 1999 protests against a summit meeting of the World Trade Organization and uses them as a backdrop for a fictional story about characters swept up in the tumult.  The result is not quite a documentary and not quite a drama, but interesting all the same.  With Andre Benjamin, Woody Harrelson, Ray Liotta, Connie Nielsen, Michelle Rodriguez, Charlize Theron. (R) Three stars – RE

BODY OF LIES: A James Bond plot inserted into today’s headlines with expertise about modern spy craft, terrorism, the CIA and Middle East politics.  Its hero (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a lone ranger who operates in three countries, fabricates a fictitious terrorist organization, and survives explosions, gunfights and brutal torture.  Some elements you can believe, but too much is sensationally implausible.  Co-starring Russell Crowe.  Directed by Ridley Scott. (R) Three stars – RE

  • The Grand Cinema: Thurs 1:50, 9:05.

BOOGIE MAN: THE LEE ATWATER STORY:

  • The Grand Cinema: Fri-Thurs, Nov. 6 4:35, 8:30.

BURN AFTER READING: The Coen brothers’ screwball comedy that occasionally becomes something more.  The characters are zany, the plot coils upon itself with dizzy zeal, and the roles seem like a perfect fit.  The plot involves the missing computer disk of a fired CIA agent (John Malkovich), and no one in it understands the big picture.  With George Clooney, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton and Brad Pitt, playing a very unPittian role. (R) Three stars – RE

  • AMC Narrows Plaza 8: Thurs 2:45, 5:05, 7:25. Fri-Sun 1:55, 7:25. Mon-Thurs, Nov. 6 2:30, 7:25.

CITY OF EMBER: In a futuristic but old-fashioned village buried far beneath Earth’s surface, humans have lived for more than 200 years.  But now it’s up to young Doon and Lina (Harry Treadaway and Saoirse Ronan) to avoid the giant mutant moles and find an escape route.  Correctly rated PG; there’s not a moment of dash-13 in it.  With Tim Robbins, Bill Murray, Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Martin Landau. (PG) Two and a half stars – RE

THE DUCHESS: Keira Knightley plays Georgiana, wife of William, fifth Duke of Devonshire (Ralph Fiennes), a monster who loves his dogs more than her.  Yet she becomes the most popular woman in Britain, sponsor of one prime minister, lover of another, a feisty liberal.  Not one of those delightful Jane Austen adaptations. (PG-13) Three stars – RE

  • The Grand Cinema: Thurs 4:15, 6:40.

  • Century Olympia: Thurs 12:50.

  • Regal South Hill 6: Thurs 12:55, 9:15.

EAGLE EYE: The word “preposterous” is too moderate to describe it. This film contains not a single plausible moment after the opening sequence, and that’s borderline.  Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan are two ordinary people given instructions by an omnipotent voice, and find themselves embroiled in a cross-country adventure that leaves behind a trail of dead bodies and wrecked cars.  With Rosario Dawson and Billy Bob Thornton. (PG-13) Two stars – RE

GHOST TOWN: Ricky Gervais, a British comedian whose work on TV is legend, has at last found a leading role, and it’s a good one.  He’s a stand-offish dentist who suddenly finds his space invaded by ghosts.  Somehow he offers a line of communication between the spirit realm and the mortal world.  Greg Kinnear and Tea Leoni are a living/dead couple he finds himself involved with, in a consistent smiler. (PG-13) Three stars — RE

MAMMA MIA!: Movie version of the hit stage musical, with Meryl Streep as the villa owner on a Greek isle and Amanda Seyfried as her about-to-be married daughter.  The girl doesn’t know who her father is, but finds an old diary and invites three likely candidates to her wedding: Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard.  Wall-to-wall with ABBA songs, of course, and energetic dancing. (PG-13) Two stars – RE

  • Blue Mouse: Fri-Thurs, Nov. 6 7. Also Sat-Sun 4:15.

MAX PAYNE: Mark Wahlberg does the stoic thing as the titular character in this consistently mediocre action-noir thriller based on a video game.  Many scenes play like an imitation of similar scenarios in better thrillers.  The slow-motion, “bullet-time” photography, the twists you can see coming a mile away, the tattooed villain with seemingly superhuman strength and a lust for blood — yawn.  We’ve seen it all before. (PG-13) One and a half stars — RR

RELIGULOUS: The movie is about organized religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Mormonism, TV evangelism and even Scientology, with detours into pagan cults and ancient Egypt.  Bill Maher, host, writer and debater, believes they are all crazy and could lead us prayerfully into mutual nuclear doom.  He doesn’t get to Hinduism or Buddhism, but he probably doesn’t approve of them either.  It’s really funny, except possibly when he gets to your religion. SAW V: Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) may be dead, but his traps and puzzles live on.  In the fifth installment of the grisly series some questions are answered and new ones are asked. Rated R for sequences of grisly bloody violence and torture, language and brief nudity. (R) – BW

SEX DRIVE: Ian (Josh Zuckerman), a teenager desperate to lose his virginity, meets Ms. Tasty in a chat room and drives from Wisconsin to Tennessee to meet her, taking along best friend Lance (Clark Duke) and hometown girl Felicia (Amanda Crew). All the usual human reproductive and excretory functions are evoked, plus new, probably impossible ones. Sometimes funny, always vulgar. (R) Two stars – RE

THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES: A heartwarming parable based on the much-loved novel by Sue Monk Kidd.  Queen Latifah presides over an idealized rural household that provides refuge for a 14-year-old runaway (Dakota Fanning) and her nasty father’s housekeeper (Jennifer Hudson).  With Alicia Keys and Sophie Okonedo.  Defies harsh reality, but in a good way, if you see what I mean. TROPIC THUNDER: A troupe of actors, thinking they’re making a Vietnam War movie, gets lost in the jungle and is captured by druglords who think the actors are narcs.  Very funny, with a terrific performance by Robert Downey Jr. (R) Three and a half stars – RE

W.: Oliver Stone’s W. tells an absorbing story of a poor little rich kid’s alcoholic youth and torturous adulthood.  Wounded by his father’s disapproval and preference for his brother Jeb, the movie argues, George W. Bush rose until he was finally powerful enough to stain his family’s legacy.  Josh Brolin is a persuasive Bush, but the movie’s most compelling performance is by Richard Dreyfuss as Dick Cheney.  With James Cromwell, Ellen Burstyn, Richard Dreyfuss, Scott Glenn and Toby Jones. (PGT-13) Four stars – RE
