The zen of Willow

A tree grows on 21st street â€" no, wait, it’s a salon!

The newest salon in Tacoma opens in 25 minutes, and it’s already bustling. Owner Jolene is on the phone while Bridgette, who multi-tasks as esthetician and receptionist, offers coffee, tea and water to the people assembled in chairs waiting.

Lisa, the other stylist currently working in the salon, breezes in right before her client, and by the strike of 1 p.m. Bridgette is happily at the task of waxing her client, and the aromas of peppermint and lavender mingle as Jolene and Lisa massage the scalps of their smiling clients.

Willow Salon grew quietly, rather like the tree it was named after. Jolene explains that the name sort of came to her and Dave, after trying on names like “Zen” and “Whispers.” The name fits its location and logo, designed by a client of Jolene’s, as it sits quietly on its corner of 21st Street in an area where many streets are named for trees. Its airy, spacious, fresh and clean interior provides a contrast to the neighboring Wow’s and Magoo’s Annex; a peaceful, fresh-smelling sanctuary. Owners Jolene and Dave Dittmar built the space up quietly, wanting to surprise their friends and families.

At this point, the spa portion of the salon is still under construction, with space for three treatment rooms where the salon will offer massage, manicures, pedicures, and esthetic services. This space is set to open before the holidays; Jolene and Dave project a November opening. Additionally, the couple hopes to provide wall space to local artists who want to display art work.

A full range of hair services is available, with both Davines and Pureology products available for sale, as well as waxing specials going on for a short time.
