Go Philly

A little bit of Philadelphia in Tacoma

Lincoln High teens gather at Go Philly after school, other shop owners pop in to say hello and grab take-out, the phone rings loudly with to go orders. This neighborhood corner sandwich shop opened last June and is doing so well the owner is already looking at opening additional locations.

Go Philly has a casual environment perfect for a quick lunch bite or hanging around munching orders of fries and sucking down lemonades and sodas. It’s reminiscent of malt shops and burger jump joints of eras gone by. The friendly staff, eye-pleasing décor, moderately-priced menu, quick service and tasty food are a recipe for success.

Go Philly is styled after a traditional Philadelphia sandwich shop serving the same. Stacks of napkins are a necessity when handling a nine-inch white bread bun overflowing with spiced meat jam-packed with grilled onions and peppers. Philly styles include buffalo wing, barbeque, pizza and teriyaki sauces and a choice of steak or chicken, offering a twist on the original Philly Sandwich (regular $7.50, small $5.50). Grab a hefty side of fries and fountain drink for $2 more. Sandwich and fries are so large, a to-go bag is a given.

Besides Philly sandwiches, eat up fun stuff like a Reuben Dog; take a regular Reuben sandwich, slide a hotdog in there and slap it all on a hotdog bun instead of bread ($4.99). You can also get orders of six, 10 or 20 chicken wings, five different ways to chow down on fries: with cheese, chili, pizza sauce, steak and cheese or chicken and cheese. Mmmm ... chili fries. A major factor in everything Go Philly does is the commitment to value. All menu items are priced under $10 (excluding a 20-piece chicken wings, $13.99). Eight different hoagies served on Amoroso Italian rolls make it hard to make up your mind. I like combining the veggie hoagie with American hoagie (bologna, salami, ham, American cheese). It makes me feel healthy while still getting my ‘carnivore’ on.

Try dunking fries in Ivar’s clam chowder ($3.25) or belly-warming chili ($2.75).
