Rockaroake reigning champ and all around fun chica Najamonique Todd took a minute to chat with me. We overheard the tattoo guys in back talking about something, and Todd clarified what the subject was: “They’re talking about Monday nights at Jazzbones — the whole indie rock scene in Tacoma shows up there. It’s getting crazy fun.”
She adds, “Everybody and their mom is there, and they’re toasted.”
We start talking hair, and she educates me some more.
“Not everybody walks out of here with a Mohawk and purple hair,” explains Todd of the misconceptions surrounding the type of hair that comes out of Supernova Hair and Tattoo. While Todd is working on purple and pink hair on her friend Dell, she explains that most of what she does is “normal” hair — regular foils and “the bohemian look,” which she describes as a long cut with longer, relaxed layers. “Bangs are back,” Todd emphasizes.
For Dell, though, she works the more cutting-edge steps. “Aka the Brian Bosworth,” quips Dell.
“Dell’s like my doll. I can do what I want on her hair,” says Todd.
Dell has her own take on their relationship. “I’m Gail to her Oprah.”
