Veterans Day events in the South Sound

Where to honor our heroes in the Puget Sound area

Americans take pride in celebrating and honoring their veterans every day - but none more so than on Veterans Day. On this day, patriotic pride sweeps through the land, and people pause to personally thank veterans for their service to our country. Those who live in the communities that surround military installations especially take things up a notch by honoring the veterans within in their communities with various events and discounted admission prices. Here are a few events this Veterans Day that help honor those who answered the call to serve.

Thurston County Veterans Council's Veterans Day Celebration, Friday, Nov. 11 beginning at 10:30 a.m. at the Capitol Rotunda in Olympia. This event will feature music and speeches.

Boulevard of Remembrance Naming Ceremony, Friday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. at the Lakewood City Hall. This event pays tribute to the original Boulevard of Remembrance and Remembrance Corridor that was dedicated in 1928 in honor of those who served in WWI. The site will receive an official historical marker and officially become known as the "Remembrance Corridor."

Veterans Day Remembrance and Wreath Presentation, Friday, Nov. 11 at 8 a.m. at the Winged Victory Memorial, on the Capitol Campus in Olympia. This event is sponsored by the Department of Enterprise Services and Veterans Employee Resource Group.

10th Annual Veterans Day Observance sponsored by the Tacoma Historical Society, Friday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at Tacoma's War Memorial Park on the corner of 6th Avenue and MacArthur Park.  This year's keynote speaker will be Maj. Gen. Bret D. Daugherty, Adjutant General of the Washington National Guard.

Veterans Day Ceremony, Friday, Nov. 11 at 10 a.m. at Saint Martin's University (5000 Abbey Way SE in Lacey) near the flagpoles on campus. This event will feature a keynote speaker, music and a prayer.

Veterans Day Program, Friday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. at Chilson Hall (1301 Orting/Kapowsin Highway in Orting). This event will feature guest speaker Col. Robert D. Forsten of the 62nd Medical Brigade and music from the Puyallup Community Band. The Bethel High School JROTC Color Guard will also be present. A reception will follow the event.

Veterans Day at the Washington State History Museum, Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. at the Washington State History Museum (1911 Pacific Ave. in Tacoma). The event will feature guest speaker Lawrence Matsuda, author of Fighting for America: Nisei Soldiers. Free admission for active-duty, retired military and their families.

Veterans Appreciation Days, Nov. 11, 12 and 13 at Northwest Trek (11610 Trek Dr. E. in Eatonville).  Free admission for active-duty, retired and veterans plus a 10 percent discount in the gift shop and Forest Cafe. Immediate family members receive half-off general admission. Valid military ID cards, discharge papers or DD214s are required.

Veterans Appreciation Day, Friday, Nov. 11 at Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium (5400 N. Pearl Street in Tacoma). Veterans and active-duty military receive free admission and their families receive half-off general admission. Valid ID required.

Free admission for veterans, Friday, Nov. 11 at LeMay - America's Car Museum (2702 East D Street in Tacoma). Active-duty, retired and veterans receive complimentary museum admission with a valid military ID or proof of service.

Veterans Appreciation Day, Friday, Nov. 11 at the Museum of Glass (1801 Dock Street in Tacoma).  Active-duty, retired, veterans and their families receive free admission to the museum.
