The only thing more radical than autumn in the South Sound is drinking good fall beers during fall in the South Sound.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 15

One in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer annually. One such individual was Green Flash Brewing Company co-owner Lisa Hinkley, who was diagnosed in 2010 and, through proper treatment and her strong will, has since come out the other side victorious. With the support of her San Diego brewery, Hinkley helps raise funds to fight breast cancer with an ale brewed specifically to benefit Susan G. Komen - Green Flash Treasure Chest. The style changes each year. This year, the Treasure Chest is a barrel-aged Belgian-style farmhouse ale made pink with the addition of plum purée. Beginning at 5 p.m., the ParkWay Tavern will tap the new beer, as well as 11 other Green Flash beers. The 2014 Treasure Chest is fruity and flowery with a very subdued spice that comes on in the finish. There will be loads of Green Flash prizes, a fancy gift basket from Deschutes and the ParkWay's own "garage sale."

Pints & Quarts Pub allows Firestone Walker Brewing Co. to take over its taps beginning at 6 p.m. Tastes are a $1 for each beer. Shell out $4, and drink a whole pint, as well as keep the glass.

THURSDAY, OCT. 16

Scientists in barbecue sauce stained lab coats experimented until they found a burger combination they believed would rock the world. Those scientists wore Lunchbox Laboratory nameplates, and they presented to the Lunchbox board of directors a beef patty bigger than the bun. Minds were blown. Riding the excitement, the board brainstormed twisty fries and macaroni and cheese du jour, because there are no bad ideas during brainstorming. The janitor, sweeping the floor outside the room, peeked his head inside and suggested the cocktails should be served in beakers. That's how, more or less, the Lunchbox Laboratory was created. The scientists at the Gig Harbor location will be experimenting with a 7 Seas Brewing menu for the next two weeks. The experiments kick off with a party from 6-9 p.m.

How does a modern day brewing business go about celebrating a quarter-century of continual operation? It's a daunting task and there is no local blueprint for it, as none of the South Sound's brewing companies have been around that long. Seattle's Pike Brewing Co. celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and will drop by Pint Defiance to blow out 25 candles from 5-7 p.m. The brewery is bringing its own presents: Wood-Aged Kilt Lifter, entire Wood-Aged Imperial Stout, Reunion Imperial Pale, Wolf of the Woods Fresh Hop and Harlot's Harvest Pumpkin Ale.

208 Garfield welcomes Deschutes Brewery for a brewer's night beginning at 6 p.m. "Beer Geek" Erick Swenson will probably pour Fresh Squeezed IPA, Mirror Pond Pale Ale and Black Butte Porter, among others. Bring your 208 tasting glass for $1 off the $6 admission fee.

Total Wine & More hosts a "Not Your Father's Lagers & Ales" class from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The cost is $15.

FRIDAY, OCT. 17

Doyle's Public House hosts another St. Practice Day party. The celebration begins with Doyle's Guinness Club toast at 5:17 p.m. All the members gather before Grand Poobah Russ Heaton, who recognizes members who have hit milestones, such as 1,000 pints of Guinness, while the other members tear up. After the announcement, Heaton raises a glass of the Irish Mother's Milk and toasts the members. At 9 p.m., bluegrass/Celtic/world music band Polecat goes off.

SATURDAY, OCT. 18

Fresh-hopped beers are made by adding hop cones that have been harvested in the previous 24 hours, giving them a slightly different, more earthy flavor. Tacoma Brewing Co. will tap three fresh hop IPAs, as well as its Aristotle's Golden Mean and Broken Window IPAs running through hop-filled Randalls, beginning at 2 p.m.

Wingman Brewers will host a pumpkin and Oktoberfest party with the release of the Wingman Oktoberfest, its Pumpkin Pie P-51 Porter, plus Seattle Pumpkin Spice Cider and Dogfish Head Punk'n Ale, to name a few. The shindig runs from 5-11 p.m. with Budha Bear Bagels in the house.

The best way to experience a beer float is with a quality beer and quality ice cream, which is the route Pint Defiance will take from 3-6 p.m. The beer store and taproom has invited Tacoma's popular Ice Cream Social to sling scoops into favorite and rare pumpkin beers, including 21st Amendment/Elysian He Said Pumpkin Baltic Porter, Elysian Great Pumpkin, Almanac Barrel-Aged Heirloom Pumpkin and Ace Pumpkin Cider.

The Washington Beer Commission will host its inaugural South Sound IPA Festival with two sessions at downtown Tacoma's Union Station. For complete details, click here.

SUNDAY, OCT. 19

Top Rung Brewing Co. is now open on Sundays from noon to 5 p.m., with the game on.

The most memorable sight during this year's Olympia Brew Fest? Most guys would stumble over their words, but eventually admit it was the two young lasses dressed in Bavarian attire promoting the 2nd Annual Oktoberfest at Little Creek Casino. The guys have the pictures to prove it. The Shelton casino will offer "authentic" German cuisine and more than 30 varieties of beer from around the world as well as wines and spirits from noon to 8 p.m. A traditional keg-tapping ceremony will be held at noon followed by live entertainment. Admission is $10 per person and includes a souvenir beer mug and 10 tasting tickets.

WEDNESDAY, OCT. 22

Puyallup River Alehouse, the downtown Puyallup face for Puyallup River Brewing's beers, as well as multiple guest beers on tap, welcomes back Backwoods Brewing Company from little ol' Carson, Wash. Head brewer Jordan Tanasse will load up the jalopy with Backwoods brews, plus swag for the raffle, and hit the trail for the 6-9 p.m. spotlight. Jeff Lee from Alpha Distributing will be in the house, too.
