Eve Adams, co-owner of the unassuming Six Olives Lounge in Tacoma, has been serving her mega cocktails and massive Jell-O shots on Sixth Avenue since before the business district became a favored child in Tacoma. With so much change lately with the restaurants and bars in the area, I was surprised last month to see Six Olives looking much as it did when I was last there in 2008. I considered how fleeting being on the cutting edge really is, and how consistency can be a double-edged sword.

Those who shun change will appreciate the Six Olives menu of small plates and dinners offering most of the same items from previous years - salads, sandwiches, pasta, burger, fried shrimp and hot wings. Dishes like garlicky herb fries in truffle oil and rustic bread with Gorgonzola and candied pecans go well with the lounge's signature large scale, booze-heavy drinks.

High top tables and booths provide easy viewing of live jazz and acoustic pop on the weekend. You won't find a seasonally rotating menu featuring locally sourced, organic products at Six Olives. You will find the familiar face of Eve, a decent happy hour and a quiet place to drink without an audience.

Hours: 4-10 p.m. Tuesday-Thursday, 4 p.m. to midnight Friday-Saturday
