ANNOUNCER: As part of a property that holds a plant nursery, garden (complete with reception area for 300 people), full-fledged windmill, picture-perfect gazebo, florist shop and Mama Stortini's catering facilities, Windmill Bistro in Sumner is just one of many points of interest. Housed in the restored Sandland home, the bistro menu focuses on Pacific Northwest cuisine. The restaurant has been open since 2002, and the menu showcases native plants, herbs, meats and seafood. Currently serving lunch and weekend breakfast, dinner service will begin in May.

JAKE: Buttery biscuits. The thought of them, along with the imagined scent, consumed my mind while walking through Windmill Bistro's double doors. The place was packed. A comfortable seating area with a view through big windows makes a pleasant place to wait for a table. Wood and painted beams crisscross the ceiling. Light colored walls, light wood furniture and an open floor plan with seating for 50 to 60 people contribute to the easy vibe of the place. A second floor loft seats another 15 to 20. No magic required; it is simply comfortable.

JASON: The dining room was almost completely filled with women; if we'd been single and in our 60s or 70s we would have been rock stars. The heady scent of bread teased my nose. Funny how our olfactory senses and our sense of taste play tricks; I could swear there was lemon in the clam chowder. It had such a light zippiness to it. But our server said  it was just juice from soft, non-rubbery Pacific clams. Parsley complemented the overall taste. A roll or slice of rustic bread over packaged oyster crackers would better suit the chowder, but no biggie.

JAKE: Pretty sure Windmill is not trying to be a silver fox singles‘ hook-up spot. Did the Absolut Peppar Bloody Mary you sucked down addle your brain? Like that bunch of older ladies, lots of groups make reservations at the Windmill Bistro for lunch and combine it with a tour of the grounds and a visit to the plant nursery.

JASON: The four- or five-ounce grilled chicken breast was a bit lackluster. Described as marinated in lemon and thyme, there wasn't a hint of either, just a flavor indicating it had been cooked on a grill. Warmed pita bread lacked butter or seasoning. Thick cucumber yogurt dressing saved the day for both the bread and the chicken. A side salad of mixed vibrant greens came dressed in herbed oil and vinegar.

JAKE: Sandwiches are typically safe territory; hard to screw them up. Served with a dill pickle spear, the California turkey club seemed to have a perfect balance of un-toasted, nutty whole wheat bread, thinly sliced turkey breast, ripe avocado, sweet tomato slices and romaine lettuce. Smokey bacon added a nice crunch. Sadly, the promised sundried tomato mayo was non-existent. I would have enjoyed trying the coleslaw but wasn't given the choice the menu indicated I would be. Fries just showed up on my plate. Thumbs down.

JASON: I liked the fries; they were crisp and hot and only slightly salted, so thumbs up from me. Slabs of corned beef made one meaty Rueben layered with Swiss cheese and Thousand Island-type dressing. The sauerkraut seemed overly tart, but that may have been due to slurping bottomless sweet strawberry lemonade while eating it. Moderately toasted, I was super pleased with the marbled rye - what a treat.

JAKE: For desert, I couldn't pass up fruit cobbler in its own cup with a dough crust baked top. Generous whipped cream on top melted and mingled with the fruit. I was nicely surprised by the tartness of cranberries in the dessert; it helped balance out sweet apple. Happy belly.
