When it comes to Mexican cuisine in our country, a few places usually rise above the rest: Santa Fe; San Antonio; Phoenix; the entire state of California. See any similarities between those areas? Yes, logic states that typically, the best Mexican food in the U.S. would come from cities next to Mexico. Hence, the Northwest isn't typically renowned for that style of food. Vuelva a La Vida will hopefully change that perception, however, as their offerings are absolutely on par with the big boys.

Vuelva a La Vida means "to come back to life" in Spanish, and the restaurant was purposeful in choosing that name. They believe that their mission is to bring back the taste of home-style Mexican cooking, particularly taquerias (which are taco stands), and Mexican seafood dishes. Walking into Vuelva, it truly does feel like you've been transported far away from Tacoma: Many Mexican restaurants in the area try to overcompensate with fake and tacky-looking Mexican decorations, but Vuelva keeps things simple. All you'll see are a couple televisions, some neon light fixtures, and a fascinating mural depicting a sombrero-wearing octopus. The vibe is clear: Mexico meets the Puget Sound.

Of course, decorations don't matter in the grand scheme of things. They trust that you'll know the establishment is legitimate the second you eat their food, and Vuelva does not fool around with their cooking.

I don't love using the word "authentic," as it implies that certain things can be devalued because of their accuracy, regardless of taste. Sure, Taco Bell isn't "authentic" Mexican, but you shouldn't be shamed because you have a craving for a Doritos Locos taco. Luckily, Vuelva hits both targets perfectly: not only is it obviously non-Americanized Mexican food, but it also tastes absolutely incredible. Their seafood offerings already have an incredible reputation, but their more traditional tacos, with plenty of options, are also incredible. The taste is subtle, but the flavor present is incredible. It also helps immensely that their prices are very reasonable and the service is quite speedy - it took them less than two minutes to make and deliver tacos to my table.

So if you're craving - okay, fine, "authentic" - Mexican food in Washington, but you don't know where to look, Vuelva is the perfect spot. Don't be fooled by its hole-in-the-wall exterior, this place is the real deal. Besides, aren't hole-in-the-wall restaurants usually amazing anyways? Vuelva certainly gives credit to that stereotype.
