It's official. Col. Leonard J. Kosinski will assume command of the 62nd Airlift Wing from current Commander Col. David Kumashiro in 2015.

Kosinksi currently works as the vice commander of the 60th Air Mobility Wing on Travis Air Force Base, California, where he is responsible for the readiness and well being of more than 25,000 service members and their families.

"Congrats to Leo, his wife Chika, and their three children, Karen, Alex, and Samantha," Kumashiro wrote on the wing's Facebook page last week. "The 62d AW couldn't have asked for a more humble leader to serve our Airmen!"

A distinguished graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy (class of 1993), Kosinski is an accomplished scholar. Not only is he fluent in Japanese, but he also has four Master's degrees under his belt - a Master of Science in industrial engineering from Texas A&M University; a Master of Business Administration in international corporate strategy from Hitotsubashi University in Tokyo, Japan; a Master of Arts in international relations and a Master of Arts in law and diplomacy, both from Tufts University Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy in Medford, Massachusetts. He is currently pursuing a doctoral fellowship in international affairs at Fletcher.

But Kosinski is more than an accomplished scholar: he is also an accomplished Airman. A command pilot with more than 3,100 flight hours, he has flown the C-5A/B, C-17A, KC-135 R/T/RT, T-38 and T-37.

Previous assignments include director of operations, instructor aircraft commander, 437th Operations Support Squadron, Charleston Air Force Base; chief, Northeast Asia Branch and Japan County director  at the Joint Staff, Pentagon and deputy director of mobility forces at Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar.

Kosinski has served in many Air Force operations including Operation South Watch, Operation Allied Force, Operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom and United Relief. In 2009-10, he was the commander of the Heavy Airlift Squadron, Heavy Airlift Wing at Pápa Air Base, Hungary, where he helped stand up a 12-nation Strategic Airlift Capability C-17 consortium in order to provide worldwide C-17 airlift and airdrop in support of the European Union, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, United Nations and other international requirements, according to his biography.

It's not clear exactly when Kosinski will take the reins of the 62nd. "Strongly emphasize summer of 2015," Kumashiro wrote on the Facebook page. "Not anytime soon. I'll be around for awhile. Absolutely no let up in serving our Airmen. Lots of things to do. Lots of selfies to take."
