Currently deployed units extended?

I Corps commander briefs community, Tuesday

By Ken Swarner on April 9, 2020

I Corps and JBLM Commander Lt. Gen. Randy George briefed the larger Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) community, Tuesday, during a Facebook Live event, indicating that it is possible some currently deployed units from JBLM could be extended longer than planned.

George had little more to say on that subject other than he should know those impacts in the next couple weeks. George said there are several units currently deployed from the base.

George took a few minutes at the top of Tuesday's event to encourage resiliency, and to tell his troops and families to take advantage of the time to build closer bonds with loved ones, as well as stay fit.

"Seek out silver linings," George added, informing attendees that his son-in-law was recently furloughed from his job. George said military personnel are lucky that their paychecks continue to flow.

In other news, George said Pacific Pathways is not officially cancelled, but a new date has not been fixed. He said the base will remain in semi-lock-down mode through May 4, and any plans to reopen then or later will be a deliberate process. He said don't expect life back to normal in a couple weeks. "Think a couple months," he added.

George said there have been a few more positive cases of COVID-19 on base, but didn't specify a number. He said Madigan is prepared for any spike.

As for face masks, the directive to wear a protective cloth, face coverings on JBLM is true for anyone accessing the base, but is only required when you are unable to maintain the six-foot social distance.
