On March 7, the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) DuPont-Steilacoom Subchapter of the Captain Meriwether Lewis Chapter presents the fourth annual Hoops 4 Heroes, soldiers versus first responders basketball game. Proceeds from this event will benefit the subchapter which supports the military communities at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) and Camp Murray.

"There are two main reasons we do Hoops 4 Heroes -- this is our subchapter's annual fundraiser that allows us to support servicemembers at JBLM and Camp Murray throughout the year. The event also gives families in the area a free evening of fun to come together to show support for our servicemembers and first responders," said Amber Young, president, AUSA DuPont-Steilacoom Subchapter of the Captain Meriwether Lewis Chapter. "This event is the brain child of our last subchapter president, Karen Getchell, and the committee members who have volunteered their time." The event idea came from Baron Coleman, who founded a successful local event, Teachers versus Cops basketball fundraiser.

Soldiers from JBLM and local first responders will square off for this annual game. The soldiers won the inaugural event in 2016 and the first responders won in 2017 and 2018. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the tip-off is 7 p.m. "The stakes are high for this year's event with the soldiers battling to bring home the trophy. This rivalry will make for a great game," said Holly Constantine, vice president, AUSA DuPont-Steilacoom Subchapter of the Captain Meriwether Lewis Chapter.

"The DuPpont-Steilacoom Subchapter supports four units at JBLM and Camp Murray," added Constantine. "This event is our sole fundraiser for the year. In addition to the game, we will have opportunity baskets donated by the local community, and you can purchase tickets for an opportunity to win one. There are more than 40 baskets. With the generous support of our sponsors, the local community donations of baskets and prizes, as well as entry donations, we hope to meet our goal of $10,000. The 2019 corporate sponsors of this year's game include Farrelli's Pizza, LeMay Pierce County Refuse, America's Credit Union, Community First Credit Union, Cal Portland and McNamara's Pub and Eatery.

The game is by donation and refreshments are available for purchase. The AUSA DuPont-Steilacoom Subchapter of the Captain Meriwether Lewis Chapter is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit and all donations are tax-deductible. "We would love for everyone who can make it to join us for the event; we will have raffles and concessions and a great game of basketball. We are still taking raffle donations and sponsorships. Monetary donations are accepted as well," said Young.

AUSA DuPont-Steilacoom Subchapter of the Captain Meriwether Lewis Chapter meets every fourth Tuesday of every month, noon at Patriot's Landing in DuPont. They are always looking for new members to support their programs, as well as corporate members. If you are a business member in the city of DuPont and want to support the local military community, this is the place.
