Capt. Lindsey Gerheim's love of the game of softball is at the center of her serving in the Army.

"Since I was coordinated enough to compete, sports have provided me a solid foundation in my development as a player, teammate and coach," Gerheim said. "The initial skills of teamwork present a baseline to being a good Soldier and a good leader in the Army."

A 2007 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Gerheim presents herself as professional and polished while maintaining a sense of humor.

Commissioned as a military police officer, Gerheim serves with the 6th Military Police Group, Criminal Investigation Division (CID) at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM).

Describing herself as passionate, Gerheim joined the Army to serve the nation, earn the best education possible, and to play and start on a Division I-level softball team.

"I am passionate about living life to the fullest with no regrets," the native of Alpharetta, Ga., said.

While at West Point, Gerheim honed her skills on the diamond playing right field, third base, shortstop and designated hitter.  She also served as team captain her senior year and was honored as the Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year with an overall GPA of 3.6.

Since then, Gerheim has competed for and earned the privilege to play on both the All Army Softball Team and the All Armed Forces Softball Team. On both teams she plays the outfield.

"Soldiers stationed all over the world travel to Fort Indiantown Gap, Pa., to compete for 15 spots on the roster," she said.

The All Army Team trains to face teams representing the Marines, Navy and Air Force.  Each team plays the other team three times in a round robin tournament, and the one with the most wins takes home the gold medal.

"In 2009 we lost to the Air Force and took home the silver medal," Gerheim continued.

"In 2010, though, we went 9 and 0 and won the gold."

The All Armed Forces Softball Team is compiled through the intra-service tournament.  It travels to Oklahoma City, Okla., and competes in the American Softball Association's Women's Championship Series.

"We've done well against the elite civilian teams," Gerheim said.  "In 2009 we were runner-up; in 2010 we took third."

She did not compete in 2011 due to a military school commitment.

Gerheim is currently preparing for the late August tryouts for the All Army Softball Team by competing on JBLM with a coed CID team and on weekends with an off-post women's team called Bullys.

"I challenge Soldiers and leaders to look into the Morale Welfare Recreation's (MWR) All Army Sports program," Gerheim said. "It is a wonderful program which enables male and female Soldiers and leaders of all ranks to compete against their brothers and sisters in arms."
