When a Washington National Guard Soldier or Airman can't pay for an emergency car repair or an unexpected medical or childcare expense, the National Guard Association of Washington's Minuteman Emergency Fund is there to provide some much needed support.

"We can usually turn these situations around in a few hours," said Terry Oxley, the association's executive director. "They don't have to be a member of the association, just a member of the Guard."

After a board member does some research and verifies the need for assistance, the association can cut a check instantly. The Minuteman Fund distributed more than 100 grants last year, doling out about $58,000 to Guardsmen and their families.

"The average grant was more than $500," Oxley said.

The National Guard Association of Washington was incorporated in 1891 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the welfare and interests of the National Guard. More than one century later, the NGAW has the same mission. The organization's primary focus continues to be petitioning Congress for the resources needed to obtain better equipment, standardized training and, ultimately, a more combat ready force.

While the Minuteman Fund is arguably the association's most visible form of outreach, the NGAW also hosts a variety of events to help its members with their professional development. The main event this year is the association's annual conference, set for April 27-28 at the Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound.

"It's a chance for everyone to come together and network," said Oxley, a retired National Guard colonel who now volunteers his time on the association's board of directors.

The conference also provides a chance for current Washington National Guard leaders to speak to association members and update them on the state of the force and any issues it is currently facing.

"They present a strategic view and a look forward to the future," Oxley said.

The keynote speaker for this year's event is Jessica Wright, who serves as the acting principal staff adviser and assistant to the Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs. Wright joined the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs in November 2010, following her retirement as a major general from the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

The conference will also be a fundraiser auction, and community partners Puget Sound Energy and TriWest Healtcare Alliance will host an emergency preparedness seminar.

"We're excited," Oxley said. "We've got a great conference lined up." For more information on the NGAW or to register for the conference, visit www.ngaw.org.
