The Fisher House at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) provides a "home away from home" for families and patients receiving medical care at the Madigan Army Medical Center.

"You can get lodging anywhere in the area at any time," Jodi Land, Fisher House manager, said.  "But what we provide here is compassion, a support network for those who need to be close to loved ones."

Begun by Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher, the foundation in their name has donated "comfort homes" which have been built on the grounds of military and major Veterans Administration medical centers across the country.

Built and dedicated in 1992, the Fisher House at JBLM is just down the street from the Madigan Army Medical Center, one of three designated Level 2 trauma centers in the United States Medical Command.

When asked about why individuals should donate to the Fisher House during this year's Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), Land said that donors should be passionate about where they donate.

"Find that organization that you are passionate about and donate; I am passionate about supporting military families - both inside and outside of the gate, and I hope many in this community are too," she added.

Guests at the home utilize living rooms, a kitchen and dining area, laundry facilities, an outdoor pavilion and a fenced play area for children.  Most amenities are provided.

Currently, there is no fee for qualified families to stay at the home.

"Donating to the Fisher House is important," Land continued.  "One hundred percent of every dollar we receive goes to the operation and upkeep of this house."

Land pointed out that the house's kitchen is the most important room in the facility.

"It is a safe place to be, and most people here make their first connections with each other in the kitchen."

The CFC donation number for the Fisher House is 56608.

The house is located at 9999 Wilson Avenue, JBLM. For more information about the facility, call (253) 964-9283, extension 10; email FHMAMC@AOL.COM or visit www.fortlewisfisherhouse.org.
